The proper way to handle a situation like that is to get it on videotape, and hold your hands in front of you, palms out, with the underside of your forearm facing the attacker. Cringe and let them hit you. Do not resist.

Like I said, this is the political approach to a violent problem. If they are going to seriously hurt you, do whatever you need to do to stop them. This is only for show, if you have cameras and witnesses. Otherwise, fight back.
