McClintock drives anger on car tax

In Southern California -- land of the motel, the drive-in restaurant, the strip mall and other trappings of the car culture -- there's nothing quite so irksome as the car tax.

It's the subject of endless scorn on AM talk radio from Los Angeles to San Diego. It crops up in casual conversation at dinner parties. And, thanks largely to state Sen. Tom McClintock, it's a regular on the campaign trail in the Oct. 7 recall.

McClintock, R-Thousand Oaks, has fashioned his gubernatorial campaign to tap that rich vein of anger, plastering ``Stop the Car Tax'' slogans on every poster, bumper sticker and coffee mug that touts his candidacy.

Anyone who has received their registration in the mail has developed their own anger - after the shock. Mine is going from $265 to $795. Add the huge increase in smog fee checks to that.

The down side of the 9th circus stalling of the election is that if we have to wait until March, it gives Joe Davis more time. The upside of the ruling is that by then, half of the State's motorists will have received their huge VLF increases.

I would classify anything to do with Gore as "downside."

Say what you will about the Dems, but I have to say that Kevin Shelley (California Sec of State) has avoided playing politics on this and has done the right thing and filed a strong appeal on this case.

You would think so, however, I still see morons proudly displaying their Gore bumper stickers in this area, along with the signs that say: "Keep Davis, Recall Bush".

If Gray Davis' car tax isn't repealed, some friends of mine and I are going to sell our cars to each other for a few hundred dollars each. Then sell them back to each other.
