Lindh murder suspect pleads innocence; Sweden prepares day of mourning

STOCKHOLM (AFP) - A key suspect in the murder of Sweden's Anna Lindh protested his innocence after being questioned by police, as the country prepared for a special day of mourning for their popular foreign minister.

"He rejects all implication in this case," lawyer Gunnar Falk told Swedish television of his client, whose name is still being withheld Thursday.

Lindh died on September 11, a day after being stabbed by an attacker in a central Stockholm department store.

Her murder shocked a nation still traumatised by the 1986 assassination of then-prime minister Olof Palme who, like Lindh, was a charismatic figure who embodied the country's ideals.

Sweden was expecting more than 1,000 foreign representatives for a memorial service for Lindh on Friday, including US Secretary Colin Powell and German Foreign Minister Joschka Fischer.

Her funeral will be held the next day, in strict privacy, her family said.

Police who interrogated the key suspect overnight were tight-lipped about proceedings, and continued to pin their hopes on DNA testing in a race against the clock to gather evidence against the man.

Police have until Friday noon (1000 GMT) to justify the contined detention of the suspect, who was arrested Tuesday.

Medical staff have carried out both physical and psychiatric tests on the man, and have taken samples to compare with blood and other traces found in the department store where Lindh was fatally stabbed on September 10.

Media reports said that he had not been able to present police with an alibi.

One report, also unconfirmed, said the man had tried to commit suicide.

Police have said they are looking for at least five more people they want to question in connection with her murder, and continue to follow other leads.

Meanwhile a friend of Anna Lindh told of the last moments with the foreign minister before the fatal stabbing, which came only days before a Swedish referendum on euro membership in which Lindh had been a fervent "yes" campaigner.

Many thought her death might cause a swing towards the "yes" vote at a time when opinion polls were indicating overwhelming opposition to the single currency.

But in the end, Swedes rejected the euro on Sunday.

"She wanted to buy clothes for the last television debate of the campaign," her friend said in a short television documentary broadcast Thursday.

Swedish public television had "very precise demands" for what the foreign minister should be wearing, she said.

"She had nothing suitable in her wardrobe," said the friend, who agreed to meet up with Lindh to do some shopping in the upmarket NK department store.

Lindh was nervous, like always before debates, and the mood between both women was nervous and "giggly".

"I'm going to vomit live on television," she quoted Lindh as saying.

"I tried to cheer her up by saying that in that case it would be a short debate," the friend said.

One of Europe's most respected and best-liked diplomats, Lindh died on September 11 from her stab wounds.

More than just a gifted politician, Lindh was seen by Swedes first and foremost as a unique human being who inspired all of them with her determination, warmth and an ever-present smile.

Candle-light vigils and makeshift shrines have since sprung up across the country, following the tributes that poured in from leaders around the world who voiced shock and horror at a brutal murder widely seen as an attack on the open democracy so represented by Sweden.

Sweden Tightens Security for VIP Lindh Memorial
33 minutes ago
By Patrick McLoughlin

STOCKHOLM (Reuters) - Swedish police geared up on Thursday for tight security around Friday's memorial service for murdered Swedish Foreign Minister Anna Lindh, which will be attended by some of the world's top diplomats.

The police have been stung by criticism that Lindh was unguarded -- as is usual for most Nordic politicians -- when the knife attack took place last week, rekindling memories of the unsolved assassination of Prime Minister Olof Palme in 1986.

With Secretary of State Colin Powell, the heads of NATO and the European Commission and foreign ministers from Britain, Germany, France, Canada and Italy, among others, on the guest list, police were taking no chances with security.

"We are making strong efforts on these security arrangements and we have enough resources to manage security," Stockholm's Police Commissioner Rolf Lanen told Reuters.

Police will block access to the stretch of lake that laps against the red-brick walls of Stockholm's imposing City Hall, site of the annual Nobel prize ceremonies, where the memorial will start on Friday at 11 a.m. (0900 GMT).

The skies above Stockholm and roads in the city center will be closed to traffic as well, police said.

Foreign diplomats would not discuss security arrangements, but said there would not be diplomatic talks on the sidelines as it would be inappropriate in the circumstances.

Swedish officials said the body of Lindh, who was stabbed by a lone knifeman while out shopping on September 10, would not be present in the largely non-religious ceremony, which will include a speech by Swedish Prime Minister Goran Persson and musical tributes by Lindh's favorite singers.

An aide to the late minister said her funeral, the date of which has not been disclosed, would be strictly private.

Police have arrested a man in connection with Lindh's murder. The 35-year-old, whose identity has not been made public officially, has said he did not kill the politician.

"He denies any kind of involvement," the man's court-appointed defense lawyer, Gunnar Falk, told Reuters late on Wednesday after his first meeting with his client.

Results of DNA comparisons expected on Friday will test if there is a link between the suspect and material obtained from the murder weapon and a baseball cap found near the crime scene.

By Friday midday the suspect must be charged, released or have his detention extended by a court order.

The story I read, on one of the Swedish websites, was that the man ate his clothes in an attempt to choke himself to death.

Speaking of the Swedish euro vote...look at this snippet from National Review :

From a Financial Times editorial today[Tuesday September 16, 2003]:

"EU officials are already talking about allowing countries to put the proposed constitution to voters two or three times until they come up with the right answer."

No further comment necessary.

Freepers have stated that that's the EU intent since before the Irish vote, but if this quote is authentic , the eurocrats are now blatantly admitting it.

I tried to google that quote, and all it linked to was the National Review page. Any FT subscribers want to weigh in?

Expressen ("The Express") reports:

35-ÅRINGEN ÅT UPP SINA KLÄDER I CELLEN
Den misstänkte mördaren försökte i går ta livet av sig i sin cell på Kronobergshäktet. Han rev isär sina kläder och åt upp dem i ett försök att kväva sig. Vakter lyckades dock stoppa självmordsförsöket.

THE 35-YEAR-OLD ATE HIS CLOTHES IN HIS CELL
The suspected murderer attempted yesterday to take his life in his cell at the Kronoberg jail. He tore apart his clothes and ate them in an attempt to choke himself. Guards were successful, however, in stopping the suicide attempt.

The "NK man" (as the media dubbed him, after the department store where the crime was committed):

We have since found out that the guy is a neo-Nazi, so Yehuda suggested we call the logo he was wearing . . .

the swooshtika?

But we have also learned that he is a bisexual neo-Nazi. So maybe we should call it . . .

the swishtika?

Per-Olof Svensson
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia.

Per-Olof Svensson (born 1968?) is a suspect in the assassination of Anna Lindh.

He is a career criminal with drug and alcohol problems, and connections with Neo-Nazi groups. His previous crimes included forgery, major fraud, and some violent crimes. He is a Djurgården [a soccer team] supporter and has been known as a hooligan.

Before the assassination Svensson had been undergoing drug rehabilitation in Switzerland. Previously he had also been diagnosed with Narcissistic Personality Disorder.

He has also been living a double life, moving in the highest jet-set circles of Swedish society. Under an assumed name he moved in the best restauarants dressed in highly fashionable clothes, and may have even been slightly aquainted with Swedish Royalty. His switching a most ordinary Swedish name (there are quite a few Per-Olof Svenssons, including a sitting member of the Swedish parliament) to a more exotic one, is typical of narcissistic people, according to experts.

RE: the description at # 13.

Doesn't that sound like the guy who killed the fashion designer in Miami some years ago? Who was that guy?

He would have needed money to do that, no?

Jack Ruby? Could be...

The guy I was thinking about is "Andrew Cunanan"

Here's a story about him.

Re: 13, not the football fan angle, but the gay, night-clubbing, drugs, high-living, etc. posted here elsewhere rang a bell. There have been cable-tv-type crime shows on Cunanan
