Thanks Seem Hardly Sufficient

To all the fallen heroes
On this day of memory
We thank you for the service
You gave to keep us free

In the heat of battle
Many things can cross your mind
Your accomplishments and failures
Your loved ones left behind

But as so often happens
When the bullets fly
You fought for those beside you
For them you willingly died

Greater love has no man
Than for his friends to give his life
You gave yourself so others
Could have a family and a wife

My poor pen can't begin to give
A fitting epitaph
For those like you who gave it all
Who chose the Christ-like path
