OK, I'm back for a little while. I'm using a laptop/dial in modem and using a flashlight to type by since our power is still out.

We lost power about 1200 yesterday, but the winds really didn't pick up untul about 1700. We came though the storm pretty well, but I've worked all day today helping neighbors remove downed trees from their houses with my chainsaw. We also drove over to our church and helped clear debris there for Sunday services.

Right now, we're under curfew in Newport News tonight and are supposed to boil water for the next couple of days. Dominion Power is already saying it may take up to a week to restore power.

My family and I are O.K. I have 35 gallons of water jugged for emergencies plus propane and camp fuel out the whazzoo. We have canned and dry food enough for a week, so we're in good shape.

I'll check in now and again to see what's happening in the world. Meanwhile, please pray for those who need help. Oh, and zot any trolls for me!!

Status in Richmond, Virginia:

Power is off area-wide in all Central Virginia.
Water is mostly on, but must be boiled.

Land line phones are mostly on.

Cooking on propane grills.
Some stores open for canned goods.
No ice or water to be bought within 100 miles.

Laptop with battery - charged in the car.

A good friend and his wife are now in Medical College of Virginia hospital. Punctured lung, broken legs, head injury, from a tree crashing into their house. But alive, thank god.

you haven't missed much in terms of "news" coverage of the storm. there was an incredible amount of flooding in MD and VA... the photo score was well ... it's early.

as for Dominion Power... I was actually impressed with their efforts, and during any event of this magnitude, linemen and equipment from all over the country come to help put people back online. One such hero lost his life yesterday. It's a tough job, and I see these guys are like the wildfire fighters we have out here in the west. They're pros in a dangerous job.

Sounds like you were prepared, and sounds like you're a good hearted neighbor. Thanks for the ping, and I hope all goes smoothly for you over the next few weeks. It's gotta be a headshaking experience.
