"The gunman, believed to have a 9mm pistol - the calibre now used by US armed forces..."

Huh? And the connection is .....???

The word from Iraq is that the boys want their .45's back, the 9mm doesn't have enough stopping power on crazed jihadists. If I recall, the Army switched from .38's (the 9mm equivalent) during our last battle with crazed jihadists in the Phillipines a hundred years ago.

OH YEAH! Give 'em the .45's back. I have 2 .45s...those sum-b*tches are loud, but they will do the trick. In fact, I think that the noise alone is effective. Kind of like a pump-action shotgun. There is a certain something about that noise that means business.

If you don't pay attention to history, it will sneak up behind you and bite your A$$...
I have a buddy in Iraq (he's due to be home next week.. YAHOOO!!!)
He says the same thing, 9mm is fine for target practice and if you use hollow points it packs a good punch.
Hollow points are BANNED per the Geneva convention. You can get COURT MARTIALED if you are found with them or using them. Hollow points include all the "wonder nine" rounds that were devloped to make up for the 115 grn NATO ball's anemic stopping power due to over penitration.
(yes kids, your local cop is carrying BANNED BULLETS)
We were both around before the switch.
He misses his .45 (actually he doesn't, he brought his own... A Para Ord P14/45) but many of the guys in his platoon ain't real happy with the 9mm.
