He is General McClellan. His entry into the race permits the Democrats to be for and against the war simultaneously.

The US has a Democrat majority, and Republicans always have to attract some crossover Democrats to win any election. The Democrats, to win, only have to unite.

The Democrat hard-core is anti-war all the way, but as an anti-war party they can't win. But as a pro-war party they will lose the hard-core.

To unite, they have to be both pro-war and anti-war at the same time, out of the same mouth, in the same breath. McClellan, er, Clark, can do that.

If he wants to live to a ripe old age, enjoy his grandchildren and be one of the party's elder statesmen, he needs to be careful who he chooses as his running mate, however. But that is probably beyond his control at this point. The hook has been baited and set.

He is General McClellan.

Exactly. High class rank at West Point. Huge ego. Rises to high rank though peacetime military politics. Lousy commander in wartime, but wouldn't accept any blame for his own failures. Booted out of his command. Throws his ego into civilian politics and runs for President. Charms the media, but average voters see right through him.
