I have always loved this concept. A bit problematic in the construction though. You mentioned that inital ribbon would be 20 cm x 1 micron, and 80 tons. What material are they planning on using for this?
By my calculation this will result in a stress of 516,100 ksi at the top of the ribbon. Our best structural materials have strengths on the order of 100-200 ksi.
