Pledging allegiance to a government is quite a socialist thing to do. The government exists to protect my rights, and those of other citizens, not to compel my "allegiance."

Damn straight!! And that was the orignation and original intent of the pledge when it was written by a well known socialist.

Fidel Castro, Communist China and North Korea must force their population to pledge alliance to their tyrannical state. In America, we say the pledge because we love our nation and believe in its purpose. But, what happens when the government begins to do things that we do not believe in or find tyrannical? Will our children still be forced to say the Pledge of Alliance to a State that confiscates guns, banishes G-d, or invades citizen’s homes without a warrant? What if Hillary Clinton or Howard Dean assumes power? Will I want my children to be forced to pledge alliance to their state?
