House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi on Tuesday exhorted President Bush to fire advisers who helped him set U.S. policy in Iraq, saying miscalculations have cost American lives.

The California Democrat was joined in that call by Rep. John Murtha, D-Pa., a Vietnam combat veteran and senior member of the House Appropriations Committee. "We can't allow these bureaucrats to get off while these young people are paying such a heavy price," Murtha said at a joint news conference with Pelosi.

We've all seen this happen several times: there is a desired result, but rationally justifying it is not so easy.

The result is a pile of paper that looks impressive by weight, but within the pile there is no good rational argument for the action. It is a form of dishonesty to think that a good rational reason will mysteriously appear if enough facts are collected.

An example: the recall of the governor of California is a result desired by some. This path was chosen rather than impeachment.

Why? There are no rational arguments sufficient to justify impeachment, but there are aesthetic arguments sufficient to justify recall. Good enough for Tinseltown.

To say that democrats are shameful is nothing new. But it is so shameful in wartime to be saying that soldier's lives were lost due to "miscalculations." I would like to point out that if a responsible elected official really believed this stuff, their obligation would be to talk to the president about it, not issuea press release. What are the odds Pelosi believes this nonsense, or that White House advisors will be fired after the most succesful and humane military operation in history?

I find this House Dem rhetoric to be acceptable political posturing. What does it do politically? It gives retreat cover to the media and prez candidates for their outrageous Bush attacks.

The following points are made:

1. fire advisers over post-war planning - normal political blather of opposition party

2. promise quick approval of the $87B - supine acceptance of Bush's foreign policy

3. questioning how the $62B was spent - establishing a ground where some other workaday political battles may take place
