September 15, 2003 A 13-year-old boy is hospitalized in fair condition after a pit bull mauled him around 7:45 p.m. Sunday in the 2300-block of South Sawyer. Neighbors say the dog has attacked before. Edwin Munoz is at Mt. Sinai Hospital. He was bitten on both legs, is hands and his crotch.
"He was just walking around and the dog was loose and he just jumped over and grabbed him and his leg. It took away skin. You could see his bone," said Omar Garcia.
Several children chanted as Animal Control officers removed the dog from their West Side neighborhood. Neighbors say the dog has been a nuisance before.
"About a month and a half ago that same dog bit another child-my nephew-- in the leg," said Garcia.
"What's it going to take, for that dog to kill somebody in order for somebody to do something about it?" asked another neighbor. "What are we supposed to do as a community? Look at all these children. What's going on here? It's not right."
The dog has been impounded, but may return to the neighborhood by the end of the month. Meanwhile, the dog's owners have been cited for not having a license and having an unrestrained animal. Both are misdemeanors.

Pit Bulls should be destroyed, owners imprisoned.

What's up with all these idiots letting their nuisance dog's run around? If there's been several incidences then kill the ****ing dog, if they don't than the city is equally responsible as this irresponsible owner. It sure make's it hard on us responsible bull dog owners, just wait and see how many names & insults will be thrown our way.

You probably feel the same way about gun & auto owners to don't you, they kill alot more people than the dogs do.

I am not one of the "kill them all" brigade, but I do think that anyone who owns a Pit Bull anywhere near where there is a chance they can get loose and do harm is irresposible. A dog crapping in my yard is a "nuisance". Tearing my daughter's leg open would qualify for a much stronger term, I do believe.

What's with all the pitbull/dog attack posts lately? Do we just have a sudden interest in pitbull attacks or is there really a sudden increase of occurance?
To: cspackler
Can't argue with that. That seems to be a logical well thought out statement, I don't think they should be running around either, especially if they have a past history of biting. 2nd time they die, if not the 1st.

I don't know about an increase, but checking Google News on a daily basis for "pit bull" generally comes up with a new attack story almost daily. Just the news. There seem to be a number of Freepers interested in these stories.

There aren't that many usually, but MM and a couple people here are on a mission to outlaw pitts so they look for every opportunity to slam them & their owners. However i'll give this to them this month, there does seem to be a lot of idiot dog owners and bad dogs this month.

Daily? Come on MM daily?

Here's the problem. Dog laws are difficult to enforce. You can keep a dog behind a fence, but eventually they will get out somehow. I would like to see licenses for these dogs with a chain of responsibility going all the way back to the breeder. However, who is going to enforce this?

Another Anti Guard dog hit piece
on the same order of handgun and assault rifle hystrionics imo
Dogs like handguns SAVE more decent Americans every day then Pitt Bulls attack in a year
and this INCLUDES PIT BULLS, Rottweilers, Dobermans, Mastiffs, Shepherds,Alsatians,Malinois,Turverans,Bouveias,
Giant Schnauzers, Ovcharkas, Bull Mastiffs, Tibetian Mastiffs, Filas, Cane Corsos, Argentinian Dogos, Presas or Dogo Canarias, or a hundred varities of herding and domestic guard dogs in the America's Europe Africa Asia Minor or Asia Proper
Somehow children mauled by Pitt Bulls is more disturbing than children killed by guns knives, abusive parents, kitchen chemicals, swimming pools, bicycles, skateboards, automobiles, sharks, lightning, electacution, black widow spiders, poisonous snakes, and electric eels...and slave labor
Communism and pedophiles kill a heck of a lot more kids than Pitt Bulls but since these things dont seem to matter much...
One can only surmise that Dog phobics love to get nervous and spread the hysterics to others hoping the State will come down and make more laws for better living...
Frustrated former student council members unite....help make more laws

I disagree, if there has even been ONE incident - the dog GOES. End of story, and of dog.

Talk about over-reaction. I suppose you'd also support killing all teenagers and imprisoning their parents just because a small handfull get drunk and cause car wrecks.
To: Libertina
If it was an unprovoked attack than I agree with you.
