After Abraham Lincoln beat William Seward for the nomination, Seward sent his close political ally of three decades, Thurlow Weed, to Springfield to check him out. Upon returning to New York, Weed looked Seward in the eye and said: "Abraham Lincoln is the best man I ever met."

Yes, Thurlow Weed was an incredible political operative and a shrewd analyst of men. He thought he would go tell Lincoln what was what, and he was told what was what.
