I read somewhere that he intended "Born in the USA" as something of a sarcastic swipe at America, and that he was a little amused that patriotic Americans had started treating it like an anthem.

You read correctly. The vast majority of people don't actually listen to music lyrics, so this this misinterpretation isn't exactly surprising.

Just ask Sting, who is constantly bemused by folks who insist on using The Police's "Every Breath You Take" as their wedding anthem song, when point in fact, his lyrics are about keeping "a watchful eye" on a former love, stalking mode, not some kind of passionate, we'll-be-together-forever love song.
