Reservist mom foils stabbing

Volunteer reservist Dolly Rozolio, a mother from Kfar Saba who serves at the roadblock at Kalandiya south of Ramallah, thwarted an attempt by a woman to stab a soldier on Sunday afternoon.

"Rozolio spotted the woman, whose face was covered with a scarf, taking a kitchen knife out of her bag as she approached the roadblock," Lt.-Col. Ronen Schviki, who commands Battalion 300, responsible for the area between Ramallah and Hizme, told The Jerusalem Post. "Rozolio yelled, 'Knife, knife,' to the other soldiers, and they immediately aimed their weapons at the woman, who dropped the knife."

He said there has been a sharp escalation in violence in the area under his jurisdiction in the past two weeks and his soldiers recently thwarted four attempted attacks.

The woman, from a well-to-do family in Nablus, was handed over to police for questioning, he said. "To me, the fact that not one shot was fired is a success. It shows that Rozolio acted in a cool and collected way and I commended her for her actions," he said. "If shots had been fired, it could have escalated an already tense situation."

Rozlio, in her 30s, began her stint of reserve duty at the roadblock on Thursday, he noted. In the early morning in the Kalandiya refugee camp his soldiers arrested Hamas fugitive Ali Hassan Muhammad Fared, who allegedly was planning a suicide bombing. Soldiers later found a bag containing the bomb.

On Friday, at the A-Ram roadblock nearer to Jerusalem, soldiers arrested a Fatah member who allegedly planned a suicide attack in Jerusalem. "In the past week, violence has escalated 400 percent, aside from the ongoing arrests and the thwarting of terrorist attacks," Schviki said. "The soldiers manning the roadblocks are under a lot of tension. Last week, shots were fired at soldiers, and there have been a number of stone-throwing incidents. The charged atmosphere has required soldiers to operate differently." IDF and Shin Bet forces have thwarted seven suicide attacks in the past week, officials said Sunday.

On Sunday evening, IDF special forces in Nablus arrested senior Tanzim commander Bashar Tabila, a bomb expert suspected of planning numerous attacks.

In the afternoon, a lightly wounded border policeman arrived at the Shema roadblock in the southern Hebron Hills and reported that he had been driving not far from the roadblock when he was attacked and beaten by a mob and his weapon had been taken.

Meanwhile, soldiers arrested a Hamas fugitive in Rantiss, northwest of Ramallah. Shots were fired at soldiers near Rafat, close to Ramallah. In Silat a-Hartiya, northwest of Jenin, soldiers demolished the homed of Islamic Jihad member Basher Shuhana, who attempted to dispatch a suicide bomber in August. According to officials, he recruited, instructed, and dispatched the bomber. Arrests prevented the attack from being carried out.

In the Gaza Strip, Palestinians reported seven were wounded during clashes with soldiers near Kfar Darom. IDF officers said hundreds of Palestinians demonstrated and threw stones at IDF positions near the settlement. Soldiers attempted to disperse the mob with tear gas and fired warning shots in the air, but when the crowd continued attacking, the soldiers fired at the feet of those identified as the mob leaders. Shortly after the Palestinians dispersed. Two mortar shells were fired at Neveh Dekalim in Gush Katif.

The Prisons Service, meanwhile, announced that one of the guards accompanying security prisoners to the Judea Military Court at the Ofer IDF base spotted the lawyer of one of the detainees filming the lock-up cells and other buildings in and outside the complex. Officials said the guard confiscated the camera and officials who checked the film found that the lawyer had also caught the faces of security prisoners, guards, and soldiers. The lawyer was arrested.

"If shots had been fired, it could have escalated an already tense situation."

If shots had been fired, it would have eliminated a problem. Now she might return, as a bomber.
