The San Francisco Dog Mauling

On January 26th, 2001, 33-year-old Diane Whipple was mauled to death by her neighbors’ dogs in the hallway of her San Francisco apartment building. The brutal attack shocked residents of the city, and Whipple, young, prosperous and gay, quickly captured the public’s sympathy. But what was first seen as a tragic accident soon took on a more sinister tone. The dogs’ owners, Marjorie Knoller and Robert Noel, husband-and-wife attorneys, began making statements that seemed to suggest Whipple herself might have been to blame for the attack. And when information surfaced that the couple’s dogs had a history of violent behavior, the public – and prosecutors – began clamoring for justice, culminating in criminal charges against Knoller and Noel.

AMERICAN JUSTICE: THE SAN FRANCISCO DOG MAULING reports that following a dramatic five-week trial, both Knoller and Noel were found guilty of manslaughter and owning an animal that kills. But it was the last verdict, against Marjorie Knoller, that was the most stunning: guilty of second-degree murder for the death of Diane Whipple. Then, in a final twist to the sensational story, that verdict was thrown out by the presiding judge, raising questions on both sides of the aisle about the fairness of American Justice in the midst of today’s media frenzy. I am not a pit bull hater. I am a bad animal owner hater. People who are just plain stupid with pets. Like my friend who invited us to his house and left his (known to bite) shetland sheepdog out to charge my five year old. Thanks to this man, my daughter is terrified of dogs.
We had plans to get a dog after my younger child was potty trained. Now even puppies scare my older one.
If you have a dog of any breed, put it away when company comes. It's your pet and for God's sake, it's a DOG. Let the poor thing have the dignity of being one. It truly is not a child.

Hey, over here! I suppose the government should just butt out here, as it is your right in a free republic to own whatever dog you want, regardless of it's danger to others, right?

Diane Whipple was disarmed by her government and therefore prevented from being able to save her life when attacked. Whe had plenty of time to call for help. You can't pin her murder 100% on the dog. If it either partly the government's fault for preventing her from being able to defend herself, and/or partly her and Darwin's fault for believing the gun grabbers, if she was anti-gun even if gun ownership had been allowed to her.

Also, with rights come responsibilities. If owners of Maul Dogs face murder or manslaughter charges every time someone gets killed and appropriate assault charges every time someone is attacked, proper training, restraint and discipline might rapidly come to all dog owners, especially the owners fighting dogs at high risk to become Maul Dogs.

Exactly. People get pets like they are buying throw pillows for their sofas. Little to no thought is put into is it the right pet for the family, home and neighborhood.

A dog like a Presa doesn't belong in an urban setting. I could see it as a great dog to have in an isolated rural area when protection is a consideration.

Whatever, any animal taken into your care requires a proper habitat, shelter, food and most of all, adequate training/discipline/attention to keep it socialized and safe for family and friends

Goes for dogs, cats or a Moluccan 'too (known for screaming loud enough 24/7 to make your eyes water and ears bleed).

I agree with you 100 percent. That post was for one of the "don't tread on me" high horse riders - you know, the ones who use every excuse to cry about their dwindling liberties every time some hilbilly decides to ignore a law he doesn't agree with, and gets arrested.

The Little Rascals. Pete was a pit bull. They weren't always nutcases, they have just been bred that way lately. I'd trust a pit bull mix, but not a purebred today.

This case is really strange. After I saw the program I went to the internet and saw this case was also about beastiality.

Gack...but I've heard the same thing.

There were also references to their adopted son, Cornfed Schneider, a leader of the Aryan Brotherhood, something about a "triad," something the prosecutors wouldn't discuss. From what I was able to gather, these dogs were being trained to protect Schneider's outside "business interests," which were drug manufacturing and distribution.

Nope, just the opposite. Losers who own roties or the various bull terriers often own dangererous dogs, because the losers behave in ways that make them dangerous. Solid citizens who own such animals socialize and train and handle them in such ways as to make them the fine pets and companions that they have the potential to be. There are exceptions in both directions but the above is as true as any generalization can be.

At the same time, the lawyers' involvement with Schneider was deepening. After Whipple's death, the authorities learned that Schneider had had topless photos of Knoller in his cell, and they also served a search warrant looking for photos that supposedly depicted Knoller and the dogs having sex. There were erotic letters from the lawyers to the man they now call their son. And there was Schneider's prison artwork, much of it depicting a nearly nude Knoller with the big dogs.

A Flirtation No Longer What happened to Robert Noel and Marjorie Knoller? One lawyer at the trial suggested that Noel, himself a big man, was attracted to the extreme machismo and violence that was represented by Schneider and was so different from his own well-to-do life. A former Pelican Bay guard quoted in Rolling Stone magazine said he saw Noel change. “I'd get on the phone with Bob to ask him about a case,” Keith Whitley said, “and all he did was talk about how big Bane's balls were.” Noel himself bragged to the magazine about the size of the dog's penis and its erections.
