The British once beheaded their own king for attempting to weaken their national sovreignity. Charles I was planning to bring in foreign troops, really bad idea.

Were they under UN auspices?

The "execution" of King Charles I, a good and pious man, was a criminal act with absolutely no foundation in English law whatsoever.

Charles I was planning to bring in foreign troops

Not true. Charles I was also King of Scotland; he had every right to appeal to his Scottish subjects to crush a rebellion in England. The union of the crowns meant that for all practical purposes, Scots were not "foreign."

For the truth about this martyred king, see Goetz_von_Berlichingen's posts on this old Cromwell thread.
