I saw the pilot interview about this. He had to fight hard and use all his flying skills to land that plane safely. It's a miracle they didn't crash.

At the time, I believed the government's main concern was getting them back from the Chinese.
Funny about Americans. We seem to put a really high value on life.

I went to high school with one of the enlisted aircrew on that plane. He came back to visit his hometown several months after the incident and said that the landing was the most terrifying event of his life.

I remember that a lot of the arm chair commandos here said they should have crashed the plane instead of land in China. Easier said than done I'm afraid.
