A two-year-old boy slipped out of his mother's locked motel room, climbed into the family car and accidentally drove it through a door and window and into the room, authorities said.
The child, Rex Davis, was not injured and no-one else was hurt in the accident yesterday morning.
Hillsborough County Sheriff's office said Rex's mother, Ginna Hopkins, was taking a shower when the boy got out.
"It's almost unbelievable that a two-year-old could have done that," Lieutenant Rod Reder said.
One detective dubbed him "Little Houdini."
Hopkins had left the unlocked car in first gear, and it lurched forward about 2.5 metres when Rex started the vehicle, crashing through a door and window at the Red Roof Inn and causing about $US2000 ($3000) in damage, Reder said.
Even as one deputy investigated, Rex left the locked room again and climbed back into the car.
Hopkins declined to comment. She won't be charged.
"The child was well cared for, the door was locked, and the mother has to take a shower sometime," Reder said. "She just has a very precocious child."
My daughter made me a mother, my son made me a MOM!
Davis signed the "First Steps" Drivers License bill ten minutes ago to attract the preschool voting block.
She was in her car seat in the back of our nanny's car, the car was in "park" and the keys were in the nanny's pocket. We were standing talking to the nanny right next to the car in our driveway. My daughter unbuckled her harness, climbed into the front seat, and put the car into neutral. It started rolling downhill, my quick-thinking husband grabbed the steering wheel (thank goodness the window was open) and turned the car uphill so that it came to a stop in a large privet bush. He reached in and put it back into gear, looked at our daughter, and said, "Just what do you think you're doing?"
She looked at him and said, "Driving." (you idiot - what do you think I'm doing?)
No harm no foul. Car wasn't even scratched.
Thank you!! I am the mother of Rex Davis the one who drove the car. He is now almost 6 and he still keeps me on my toes. lol
(And I'm not starting on the shower jokes).
How in the world did you find this post? That was so long ago!
It takes a special mom to raise a child like Rex - not everyone gets blessed with such a challenge. You must be quite capable!
Welcome to FreeRepublic! Looks like you may need an outlet! God bless you. I can see that you have your hands full. I had a live wire too. Her Sunday School teachers, as loving as they were, hated to see us coming. And we were banned from some stores because she was just so, er, active. But she’s going to graduate from college next month and we have survived. As she grew older, her energy and her positive attitude on life has been a blessing. Hang in there and your little one should bring you a great deal of joy. And again, welcome!
