If the water rises more than about 6 feet, it will wash at the foundation of my sister-in-law's house on a saltwater creek in Savannah.

She evacuated two or three years ago when a hurricane came near -- the roads were so jammed, it took her about 24 hours to get to Atlanta.

Just thinking about Savannah makes me hungry for boiled peanuts.

I was running one shift of the military desk at the GEMA EOC in Atlanta for Floyd. It wasn't my duty station but I was out of town on business and they closed KSAV before my plane could get in. I walked into state HQ right as they were trying to find a warm body. My timing stunk that week.

It took my wife and kids about 8 hrs. Anyone leaving after that took 15-24 hrs. When it comes to evacuating, leave early, leave often!

Just thinking about Savannah makes me hungry for boiled peanuts.

If it misses us, the peanuts are on me.
