Care to share your interpretation of what McClintock was attempting to articulate?

Simple. He said that he's in this to the end......and that the voters will go the way they feel. What he was saying (in effect) is that those who decide to vote for another candidate whom they feel is more likely to win will do so, if they are so inclined. I respect that.
