DEAUVILLE, France - Roman Polanski finally took home his Academy Award statue for best director this weekend, nearly six months after winning for "The Pianist."
Harrison Ford, a friend of Polanski and the star of his 1988 movie "Frantic," handed the director the prize Sunday at the Deauville film festival. Ford also had announced Polanski's win at the March 23 ceremony in Los Angeles, which the director didn't attend.
Polanski faces arrest in the United States since pleading guilty to having sex with a 13-year-old girl. He was charged with rape and five other felonies in 1977.
As part of a deal with prosecutors, Polanski pleaded guilty to having unlawful sex with a minor, then fled Los Angeles for Paris in 1978 to evade sentencing.
The 70-year-old is presiding over the jury at Deauville, on the Normandy coast.
"The Pianist" won the Palme d'Or at the Cannes Film Festival, and also earned Oscars for best adapted screenplay and best actor. Adrien Brody starred as Polish-Jewish pianist Wladyslaw Szpilman, who eluded the Nazis in the Warsaw ghetto.
Don't get me started on the French. I'll put it this way as nice as I can, I'm not a big fan.

To a certain extent, whether she was 12 or 13 or 14 or 15 is irrelevant. Polanski was three times her age.

They still fought his extradition based on the Death Penalty. In order to give Ira up, we had to retry him, thus caving into the hated French. If this was someone the Israelis had wanted, he would have been executed long ago. And just so there is no confusion; THE FRENCH SUCK.

FLASH! Breaking news! France expelled Einhorn to the US in June of 2001 - over two years ago. He was sentenced to life in prison in October of 2002.

It's life in prison rather than death, because the French refused to extradite him unless the Death penalty were waived and required that a new trial be held. Apparently the French don't honor the results of trials in abstensia.
I read the girl's testimony transcripts. He told her parents that he wanted to take some modeling-type photos of her. He then gave her drugs and alcohol, then after she was in no condition to resist forcibly raped her after she said no, then finished by anally raping her after she told him she wasn't on birth control. If she was 21, it would still have been rape.
