Besides, if we are naming them after friendly polycritters, why is there no USS Scoop Jackson?

Yes there is.
SSBN 730 was commisioned as the USS Rhode Island. The Fifth Ohio Class SSBN was renamed for Senator Jackson.

USS Jackson, SSBN 730

Now I should have thought to check the submarines, as some of those were named after polyticians and other people. George Washington, Lafeyette, etc. But I guess I was just thinking of carriers. It's also true, I think, that the Jackson is the only Ohio class boat not named after a state, so I never even looked there. The Jackson should probably be a destroyer or a frigate, as naming them after people is common. Carriers should be named after historical ships of the line. SSBNs after states, since they replace the battleships, SSNs after cities. Tugs after Indian Chiefs, tect.

Be nice if the Navy would stay consistent in it's ship naming conventions, wouldn't it?

Thanks for the correction!
