Dog owners, this is the proper technique for feeling for doggie's ribs.

Cat owners, this is the proper way to determine if kitty has a "slight waste with no roundness of the belly".

Obviously this subject is now getting national attention. Please ping all our doggie and kittie lovers and lets work together to bring our loved ones back to health!

Sounds like the National Research Council needs to do a little trimming - of itself.

Perhaps putting them on the "Catkins" diet would help.

Feeding of cats should reflect this -- with 12 to 20 very small meals being offered through the day, the report says.So thats why my cat wakes me up every hour

The report confirms that cats are carnivores, and need meat products in their diet, whereas dogs can get along fine on balanced vegetarian diets. The best balance of protein and carbohydrates is also different for cats than for dogs.My goodness, w, carbohydrates are fattening and killing people, what a shock it is to now read that dogs and cats are getting fatter and sicker on the carbs found in their junk food! /sarcasm
Put your dogs and cats on the Atkins Diet, for crying out loud...

The report confirms that cats are carnivores... Proof that a PhD is needed to conclusively prove the most obvious of truisms.

We have two "fixed" indoor cats of the same age. We just keep the food bowl topped off and let them eat whenever they like, which has always worked for us over the years. The female is sleek and trim, the male is a blob of blubber. We tried putting him on a strict diet, but it was too hard to feed them separately, and soon, all we were to them was a possible feeding time. Almost a year later, they greet us at the door and then rush to their (full) food bowl.
