My friend, I am moving back to the country! I'm getting my suburban house fixed up so I can put it on the market next spring, and I'm going to buy a rundown pre-Civil War farmhouse I can restore. It should be on a few acres so I can keep some horses, chickens, and maybe a goat out back. But unlike my former neighbors, I won't be eating the goat. And I swear I will NOT start whining that the Blockbuster and dry cleaners are too far away and we need to build a new strip mall near my house.

well, think this'll make the nightly news? Of course, the answer will be to buy the land at cents on the dollar (enter Nature Conservancy) and force everyone off the land and into stacked housing projects.

Where the heck in Maryland do you live? There are definitely laws against creating a public nuisance/health hazard of the type you describe here.

I'm about five miles north of Gaithersburg, smack in the middle of over-regulated Montgomery County. And yes, it was a public nuisance, and yes, there are laws against it, which is how we got this charming foreign gentleman to stop hanging skinned animals up on his deck. Otherwise he was adamant that he was not going to alter his precious cultural and culinary traditions for the convenience of us black and white folks.

Of course, this was nearly a dozen years ago, when everybody was so much less enlightened than they are today. If we tried that today I imagine the ACLU would have our American backsides in court.

Since when? There is a wide streak of anti-human sentiment in the environmental extremism crowd. Some openly speak of humanity as a "cancer growing upon the earth," and I would wager that the vast majority are in favor of abortion on demand and zero population growth.
