a driver’s license is a legal identity document. It should not be. It should merely be a license to drive in each state, having proven that you know the necessary traffic laws to not be a menace to others and yourself. If that were the only purpose, we wouldn’t even have this discussion. Where I come from (Germany) a driver’s license is just that. It is not a legal document for identity purposes. You get a national ID card. That would definitely solve a lot of citizenship problems here. All other legal immigrants there just have to show their passport to prove their status when necessary.
