Politics isn't just perception, it's also content. If you elect someone who has no interest in issues you think are vital, or in fact opposes them, then don't complain if he leads the party into directions you don't want to go. Bloomburg has an R after his name- good enough?
Pete Wilson just gave an interview addressing Prop 187. His opinion is that it would pass by even a bigger majority if it was put to a vote again. And he said this before Davis signed the Drivers License bill.
Hugh is against 187 because the national party has decided to pander to hispanics. They think they will achieve that by doing nothing to stop illegal immigration from Mexico. Hugh is a party hack first and foremost, because he wants power and influence within the GOP. He will have no power and influence if he isn't a good boy always following the party line.
The social problems of mass illegal immigration don't affect yuppie Irvine. He didn't grow up here, he hasn't got family living in neighborhoods wrecked by the policies he embraces. When the interests of California conflict with Hugh Hewitt's desire for political power, the interests of California lose.

Thank you for your very perceptive post. I'm just very concerned about what a Communist, Spanish 1st, California back to Mexico's Control Gov. CRUZ would do to us all after the Recall Election =
A Republican MUST Win Situation

But I'd say that the Justice Department, and this President have done a pretty D*MN good job all things considered since they came on board. They have been an abysmal failure on the illegal immigration issue.

Tom Ridge was once asked why we dont put the military on our borders and his resonse was, forgive me if this isn't an exact quote but "there political and economic reasons" TRANSLATION we're pandering to the hispanic vote and we need cheap labor.

"Most illegals are Asians and come in through Washington state or British Columbia."
Cite your source. All the studies I've seen show that the vast, vast majority of illegals are hispanics, especially Mexicans, crossing the southern border. The studies estimate betwen 1,000 and 1,500 a day cross the southern border. If the number of Asians exceeded that we would have states speaking Asian tongues, which we don't (but we DO have states, or significant portions of states, speaking Spanish, with no inclination at all to learn English).

"I grew up in California and lived there until I was 34. Most of the illegals I knew were from Europe or China and there on expired work or student visas."
I grew up in Califonia, as well, but I left when I was 28. Hispanics (especially Mexicans) BY FAR made up the vast majority of illegal immigrants (at least in Southern Californis; I can't speak for Chinatown in San Francisco).

the flow ILLEGAL immigrants north through Mexico is to give them a reason to stay in Mexico, a fairly high percentage of the immigrants are from Central and South America, if Mexico would just grow a Government, start trusting its population, Reform its Real Estate Laws it could grow a Middle Class and with their Natural Resources they could be on their way to being a Super Power themselves. But remember ---- Mexico has a democracy, the Mexican people elect their leaders --- but those people have a problem --- they elect leaders like Bustamante and Davis. It's their culture to want the government to "take care" of the people.

Sorry, but it is a fact that most illegals are hispanic. There are significant numbers of Asian and Eastern Europoean illegals (i.e. Russian, Ukrainians, etc.), but a solid majority are hispanic, especially in California.

"Hispanic" is not a race. The problem in California seems to be with one ethnic/national group (Mexican Americans/Chicanos).
Here in NYC, I am surrounded by illegal Arabs and Chinese, in addition to Mexicans. The Chinese here have an industry of teaching new immigrants how to get benefits from the government. Don't get me started on the Russians who bring all their relatives here and dump them on Medicare and food stamps.
I think the problem is that we hand out way too many "bennies" in this country. I realiize that in California, the problem seems to be concentrated among the Mexicans, but here in New York, I see it among all types of people.

Yeah, but many of the "legal" Asians are a problem here too. You should see how many of them use the WIC (food stamp) card at my local supermarket. Let's not forget that most Asians vote Dem as well.
