WASHINGTON (Reuters) - President Bush will announce on Sunday night that he plans to ask Congress for $87 billion to fund the U.S. military deployment in Iraq and pay for reconstruction, a Republican source said.
The source, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said the money would fund U.S. military operations in Iraq and reconstruction over the coming budget year.
The figure includes assistance for Afghanistan. Bush was to make the request in an 8:30 p.m. EDT address to the nation, the source said.
The figure was at the high end of expectations. Some members of Congress said earlier they expected Bush to get what he asked for but wanted him to detail how long U.S. troops would remain in Iraq and outline a strategy for bringing them home. (snip)

Frankly, I'd rather spend that in Iraq to crush the muslim extremists than the same amount on welfare here in the good 'ole USA so that unemployed women living in 4 br apartments can pump out more illigimate children. What do you think?

"...then the whole story we have been told - about Afghanistan and the Taliban - is off."
Perhaps the whole story has not {and cannot) yet be revealed. I believe Mr. Bush when he said this War on Terror would take 10 years or longer. I believe that Wahabism in Saudi Arabia and the mullahs in Iran are the ultimate targets in this war, for they are the cesspool breeding grounds for those who seek the destruction of Western Civilization. I believe this war cannot be won unless the nations of Iraq and, to a lesser degree, Afganistan become western allies. Yes, it is all about oil; the oil from a non-OPEC Iraq which will free us from Saudi dependency to ultimately win this war against the extremists, with which the Saudi government has aligned itself. The enemy should never be given the war plan in advance.

But, in retrospect, ten 200 megaton nukes would be a lot cheaper.

Funny how Republicans are so very concerned about deficit spending when a Democrat is in the White House yet have no problem piling up the debt for their children when a Republican president goes on a spending spree.

Money well spent. Of course we can just adopt the policy of the past two decades, nest and absorb whatever else the jihadists have in mind for us and then pay the bills at their leisure. Well said. We needed a base in the area and now we have one. Cheap, too.

We're already $598 billion in the hole for this year... Another $87 billion on top of that? Does this man have any concept of money whatsoever? I too thought Iraq was already included in the hundreds of billions added to the federal budget since GWB took office.

Sine the current generation is doing the heavy lifting on the war on terror, pass the cost on to the next generation. That will be their contribution.

I have no problem with spending $87 Million to keep us all safe. But the larger question is whether or not the Bush Administration is planning on cutting some other spending to balance all of this.Otherwise, how long will it be before he tells us that he has to raise taxes to get us there?
