The Fisher House program is a unique private-public partnership that supports America's military in their time of need by providing homes close to a loved one during the hospitalization for an unexpected illness, disease, or injury. There are currently 31 houses located on the grounds of every major military medical center and several VA medical centers. These houses will play a critical role in caring for casualties from Operation Iraqi Freedom. Donations will be used to help meet the cost of lodging for a family whose loved one was injured in Operation Enduring Freedom or Operation Iraqi Freedom. There is a limit to the number of families who can stay in a Fisher House and program is committed to help provide lodging for families who must find commercial lodging, because the Fisher House is full. |

This summer I spent several days at several U.S. AFBs. The real USO does a good to great jobs for our soldiers but a horrible job with their spouses and kids.
I met women with children spending WEEKS in airports and our USO pretty much turns a blind eye as far as their concerned. These women sometime need to take up collection to feed their children (i.e.begging) because they have spent so much time waiting for a flight to go home, they have run out of money. It's a real mess and I don't understand why the USO has no problem blowing them off.
I think the the biggest kicker is that they are not able to sleep on the floors of the some airports because of health ordinances. Who could sleep in a chair every night for 3 weeks? It's ridiculous to see.
Our USO could care less. They offer NO help what so ever to these women. It's depressing to see.
I think we should add an another beatitude. "Blessed our soldier's family because they shall be ignored"
I've really lost all respect for the real USO. (I went through a major care package fiasco with them to boot!)
You guys, on the other hand, I love.

Thank you for stopping by the Canteen.
I'm very troubled about what you've just written. I'm curious to know whether or not they were taking MAC flights back home. If so, they always tell you that you can be bumped at any time.
There are other avenues for which families can get assistance. First, they can contact their husband's command or the omsbudsman to inquire about any assistance that can be provided. Also, where were their husbands. I'm curious as to why they would leave their wives for such a long period of time without help. Were they already deployed? If that is the case, I would suggest calling the Chaplain. (I know this sounds weird, but it always works) Almost no one ever says no to a Chaplain and he/she is usually able to help provide information or services that can help the spouses and their kids.
I'm saddened by this report, but it can be made better if more people are aware of it. Thank you for sharing it with us!!

A PRAYER OF PROTECTION
The light of God surround you The love of God enfold you The power of God protect you The presence of God watch over you Wherever you are,God is, And all is well. Amen.
Bless This House
Bless this house O Lord we pray;
Make it safe by night and day;
Bless these walls so firm and stout,
Keeping want and trouble out:
Bless the roof and chimneys tall,
Let thy peace lie over all;
Bless this door, that it may prove
ever open to joy and love.
Bless these windows shining bright,
Letting in God's heav'nly light;
Bless the hearth a'blazing there,
with smoke ascending like a prayer;
Bless the folk who dwell within,
keep them pure and free from sin;
Bless us all that we may be
Fit O Lord to dwell with thee;
Bless us all that one day we
May dwell O Lord with thee.
