Poll Names McClintock as Winner of the Debate

State Senator Tom McClintock came out on top in a poll that gauged public reaction to Wednesday's candidate debate.

A News10/SurveyUSA poll found that 30 percent of California voters felt McClintock won the debate. Twenty-two percent of those questioned said Lt. Gov. Cruz Bustamante was number one, while 12 percent named Peter Ueberroth as the winner. Arianna Huffington was favored by nine percent of those surveyed, while three percent said Peter Camejo won.

As evidence that the election is still very much up for grabs, the survey found 24 percent of voters either undecided about the winner of the debate or with no favorite.

The poll showed that Arnold Schwarzenegger's decision to skip the debate may have been costly. Fifty-five percent of voters felt it was the wrong thing to do, while 37 percent approved of the actor's absence. Eight percent had no opinion.

According to the survey, Gov. Gray Davis' half-hour appearance prior to the debate may not have improved his chances of avoiding recall. About a third of those surveyed, 36 percent, said the question-and-answer session caused their opinion of Davis to fall. Seventeen percent came away from the telecast with a better impression of the governor, while 46 percent said their opinion was unchanged.

,

The poll questioned 1,444 registered California voters in the hours immediately following the debate. Margin of error for the survey is %.1 percent.

McClintock is surging...and you had better face reality. Wait till the Sunday polls appear. Arnold is slumping.

I am certainly eager to see new polling numbers. The most recent are nearly two weeks old.

What's the basis for your belief that Schwarzenegger is slumping, just out of curiosity? I don't have an opinion on that, myself -- I'm waiting to see the actual data.

Bill Kristol was on cable tv in Los Angeles tonight. He said he couldn't understand the heavy pressure the Establishment GOP was putting on McClintock to bail out of the race.

Kristol is an inside the beltway NeoCon, so I found his outrage refreshing compared to the daily chanting on Salem Broadcasting talk-radio that McClintock must throw in the towel and bow down to Arnold.

When you listen to the lock-jaw talk-jocks on the Salem system you have to wonder why they are screaming so hard for McClintock to be the scapegoat for the lousey campaign that Arnold is running.

Go, Tom! Stay the course and let Arnold drop out.

He's another one whose tactics seem to be to actually divide Republicans instead of unite them.

"why deprive the party of a win"

People within the party that put up crap like Arnold not only deserve to lose but be thrown out of the party.

So what does this mean? You want Arnold out, but Bustamente is OK? We know that McClintock won't have enough votes to win.

"McClintock is surging..."

---

Evidence?

And suppose he is "surging", so McClintock would get 20%, Arnold get 28% and Bustamante gets 38%. Looks like McClintock "surging" only helps Bustamante.

Regarding CA's recall: From your perch in New York, you're better versed and a whole lot more savvy than several CA FReepers! Appreciate your erudite comments! ;-)

As Michael Medved said, a vote for a Republican other than Arnold, is a "masturbatory" vote which will only help to elect Cruz.

Ballots are supposed to differ so we can be "fair" to all the candidates. Not only are they in random order, but the candidates names are rotated by one in each Assembly district, which makes things even more confusing. Thus, if you live in a different Assembly district than someone else (each assembly district has about 470,000 residents), then the ballot will be shifted by one person.

Ah, that explains why Onyx's Arnold is #178 and mine's #175.

Thanks!

Chulajuana LOL --- Too true to be funny. I'm in Mission Hills near the Presidio and we have them too. They rent some of the big old houses and move in five and six families. Nice, huh?
