Firms still slashing jobs

WASHINGTON, Sept. 5 — Despite the civilian unemployment rate sliding down to 6.1 percent in August, the government reported Friday that companies slashed payrolls by 93,000, raising new concerns that the fragile economic recovery could falter.

AUGUST WAS THE seventh consecutive month of cuts in payrolls, a survey released by the Labor Department showed, indicating continuing weakness in the job market. Analysts had expected companies to add 12,000 new jobs.

At the same time, the overall seasonally adjusted unemployment rate fell from 6.2 percent to 6.1 percent of the labor force, as reflected by a survey of U.S. households. Stock prices fell in early trading Friday on news of the job losses.

The survey of businesses showed that job cuts were heavy again in manufacturing, a sector that has suffered the brunt of the economic downturn that began in March 2001. President Bush on Monday announced that a Commerce Department assistant secretary post was being changed to focus on revitalizing that part of the economy.
Friday’s reports no longer reflected a cyclical economy trying to add jobs after a recession — “which is depressing,” said Sung Won Sohn, chief economist at Wells Fargo. Analysts had expected companies to add some jobs last month.

Deeper concerns now are focused on long-term structural problems in the economy, such as a flood of U.S. jobs going overseas. “We have simply seen the tip of the iceberg,” Sohn said. “I think it will get worse, not better.”

At the White House, spokesman Scott McClellan said, “The economy is growing but we want to see it grow even faster.” He said jobs are one of the last things to grow as the economy improves.

Some reports estimate 5 million jobs — many high-paying — will be lost to other countries by 2015. As the economy grows, demand is being filled from overseas, Sohn said. Also, because of that increasing global competition, businesses are holding down costs by not hiring. If hiring doesn’t improve, the recovery could be in jeopardy because consumers worried about their job prospects will stop spending. That’s been the driving force in the U.S. economy.

Hiring in health care and construction helped offset losses in factories and other industries, such as information, professional and business services and government, Friday’s report said.

Last month’s power blackout in the Northeast and Midwest was unlikely to have affected either of the monthly surveys, Labor Department analysts said.

Labor Department analysts believe the survey of businesses provides a more reliable picture of the jobs market than the household survey. The payroll report is based on a larger sample and estimates “are regularly anchored to” counts derived from employment insurance tax records, said Kathleen P. Utgoff, Bureau of Labor Statistics commissioner.

Last month, the number of people in the labor force remained largely unchanged, with just 10,000 giving up their job searches. The labor force is comprised of those working and looking for work.
Nearly 2 million people in August were unemployed for 27 weeks or more, representing nearly 22 percent of all jobless workers. Those figures were similar to July numbers.

and why is that, because he dare to state a truthful observation about what is happening with US corporate management?

No, it's because he comes off as extremely obnoxious.

If you come off in real life as you do on FR, you're another guy I'd black-ball on a team interview.

Just lost my $80K/year engineering position.

Must be tough to lose such a good job.
At least you were smart enough to stay debt free and put away plenty of savings.
Too many people I know make good money but save nothing, are in debt, and living hand to mouth.

In today's world people need to prepare for things like this.

You're kidding right? How would that help, seeing that the Chairman of the Board, the board, and all the senior executive staff are all best buddies and all go sailing on the same boats and drink from the same bottle of wine at backyard barbecues?

Today, I was telling my husband about your post and the advice to go to the board. We got a good laugh over the advice. My husband said there is no way they would NOT have you escorted out of the building. There is a huge disconnect from reality going on here.

We, then got a bigger laugh about the new Compliance & Ethics Hotline required by Sarbanes Oxley.

You tell me which is smarter: Layoff 10 $80K/year engineers who produce technical innovation or Layoff one 800K/year senior VP who produces powerpoint slides and failed management schemes.

Pssshaaaw ! Yeah, but I'll betcha not one of those engineers has pistol grip ears and a removable denture like the VP does. I'd even betcha not one of those engineers even has a single pair of square toed shoes or talks with an effeminate lisp like the executive, either. < /sarcasm >

My sincere sympathy. Also the ripple effect of 10 engineers @80k on the local economy and the Fed and State revenues is significant. No doubt we are going thru changes and at your level of expertise working at Sams or Walmart is not a real job. There are some on this Forum that love cheap deals just like shortsighted management.

A buddy of mine works for a large tech company, they sent all of their IT support and software people to India via IBM. They have 50 people left in the company in that IT division. 8 of them are VPs.

Remember the golden rule of corporate management: "a prince never shoots another prince".

What we are going thru is not a hang over, but more like a heroin user having problems readjusting from the media and stock market hype of the later 90’s. All this stuff is largely Clinton era karma coming back in our faces. The Clinton years were about mergers then acquisitions and we were looking the other way as long as our 401ks were in good shape. Manufacturing went off shore, finances and now intellectual capital made possible by the Global Network, broadband, etc. Virtually all IT companies making hardware and software have international presence/ facilities. Having said this I know the solution is not with the Democrats but letting local leaders know.

what is happening now is not about jobs at pets.com. those were all flushed out with the bubble in late 2000 into 2001. what we are talking about are stable jobs at large companies, that are not going away because "business is down", they are simply moving those jobs to offshore workers. Conscious decisions have been made in government to facilitate offshoring practices, along with these easy visa programs for workers here in the USA. All in the name of "free trade" and this insane idea that american capitalism means that businesses are entitled to have the government facilitate the availability of the lowest costs labor possible to them, anywhere on the globe, no matter what.
