Savage: McClintock 'Most Qualified'
Nationally syndicated talk radio host Michael Savage weighed in on the California governor's race, offering strong praise for State Sen. Tom McClintock.
The Republican McClintock was interviewed on Savage's show Thursday night and Savage praised the gubernatorial candidate as the "most qualified" to be governor.
Savage told McClintock that "without a doubt, you are the clear leader" among the 135 candidates in the race.
The nod by Savage may pay huge dividends for McClintock.
Savage has a large and growing audience among conservatives and independents. Savage has the fourth-largest syndicated radio audience in the U.S., with an even stronger reach in California.
For years Savage has been the ratings leader on San Francisco's KSFO. He is now heard on Bay area station KNEW. His voice is heard on high-powered radio stations in Los Angeles and San Diego, as well as dozens of smaller markets throughout the state.
McClintock said conservative grass-roots support has led to his phenomenal rise. Published polls have him in the double digits.
And there are signs that Republican support for Schwarzenegger may be hemorrhaging in the wake of scandal dislosures and a greater focus on his qualifications.
McClintock told Savage that a poll conducted by several statewide organizations had him in a statistical dead heat with Schwarzenegger and Democrat Cruz Bustamante.
This is called defeatism, something conservatives should discourage among our peers. Our ideas have all the chances in the world of succeeding. We just need to promote them.
Yes, he can. The entire recall is a Republican effort. Many Democrats will sit this one out, due to their poor candidates, Davis and Bustamante. But most Republican voters will show up. If a large majority of conservatives choose the candidate that represents their ideology, McClintock can win.
That is libel, pure and simple. McClintock supporters want conservatives to win, not fake Republicans.
Sheesh.
The base won't turn out for him even if Tom drops out because they are principled and don't want to be irrelevant. If crossovers won elections for Republicans where are Fong, Campbell, Seymour, Huffington, Curb, and Quackenbush? The only reason Wilson won was he promised not to raise taxes. Then he did and by deepening the 1991 recession it COST the state over a billion in lost revenue.
Just because one person says this, doesn't mean that you can tar all McClintock supporters as such. I stand by my original contention that your statement was libelous. It would be like me saying that all Schwarzenegger supporters must want abortion-on-demand and gay rights just because they are surrendering principles in order to "win". Oh, wait...
I don't think the LAT added any "special sauce" to a SurveyUSA poll. (The LAT poll had McClintock at 12%.)
I'm don't think you really understand California politics, McClintock's appeal, or Schwarzenegger's high negatives with a fair number of Republicans here. This is all part of a nine-year long running battle here between the grass-roots and the RNC. The RNC has had the upper hand, and thus has lead the GOP to Presidential, Senatorial, and Gubernatorial shutouts here since 1994.
Richard Nixon learned a lesson when he lost his gubernatorial run in 1962...
Richard Nixon once told a friend that he had learned from his own experience running for governor of California in 1962 that you can't win merely by appealing to conservatives. "But you can't win unless you do appeal to conservatives."

This is still true today, and this is why Arnold is having a tough time drawing conservative support. His advisors assumed the party would flock to him, and have campaigned straight from the center-left. Big mistake, and I'm not sure what he can do to correct it in the next month.
Tinfoil? perhaps. Realistic? yes. Many people think that Arnold is a Republican, and when you start pointing out things about him, they then turn into this "well Arnold is not as bad of a liberal as Bustamante or Davis" and then I scratch my head and wonder if they realize what they just said.
Thanks for helping on the recall. What McClintock supporters have forgotton so quickly is that Simon and Issa dropped out of this race. If Arnold was not in, they would be, and I don't think McClintock would have done much better than split the vote about even with these other two Republicans.
Yes, with so many Republicans willing to give up our core values and beliefs to elect a Hollywood liberal RINO, we may be doomed.
