Anywhere: 300 and a hair klicks in a 1988 Porsche 928 S4 (RUF tuned) on the autobahn in Southern Germany while my preggers ex was asleeep. When I went into a long autobahn sweeping turn and felt some loft, I backed off.

Around 235-240 klicks on the bahn again between Frankfurt and Friebourg in the rain in a MB 560SEC....and was passed by a Porsche 956.


Stateside: around 175 maybe on a Cow GPZ bored out to maximum displacement (1264cc??) with Yoshis, Kunis, the works.....two lane Mississippi back road.

Stateside Auto:
Between Atlanta and Chattanooga racing a Mustang GT driven by a game Dobbins AFB jock. I was in a stock 911 Carrera...and maxed her all the way....which to the GT's credit was about the only place I could easily pull away from her....in the 125 plus range...below that, he was drafting me.

Fastest I ever felt I was going: over 100 knots in a 37' Midnight Express offshore Miami with quad Merc EFIs on the back in 3-5 seas....that is moving!...nothing else quite like it.

Nowadays:

I think my 10 year old Land Rover might do about 90 coming down a really steep mountain like the Mounteagle grade..lol

Great credos.

You'll have to admit those 25K Mustang GTs are a lot of bang for the buck.

I drove the twisty Italian speedway between Monte Carlo and Portofino thru all the tunnels in the above mentioned highly tuned S4 and I had Boxers and whatnot pass me thru curves and tunnels on those narrow road like nothing.

I was impressed, those Milanese and Roman rich brats will drive those cars like they are never going to die....but of course they do....spectacularly.

A wierd thing about Euro driving. You can haul ass in Germany if no traffic, and France and Italy but in reality you will see more exotics in South Florida or SoKali than there overall but over there you see twin turbo rally cars and unber-exotics that are phenomenal.

I have seen a tweaked Renault twin turo shoebox with the wide wheel wells and whatnot absolutely blowing down the road.

The last "semi-fast and good handling" auto I drove was my aunt's brand new A4 with all the bells and whistles near Banner Elk NC in the mts. excellent handler but I'd hate to have to hunt for an Audi dealer.

Good thing I don't have a go-fast car....I know that even at 45, my old habits are still with me.

With 6 dependents, I am the proud owner of a 10 year old LR, my wifes MB ML320, and a 10 year old Grand Cherokee....alas.

During the early 70's my older brother bought a 67 Camaro that the son of a prominent local family had hopped up. My brother "let" me do a tune up and some other tasks on the car.
Finishing up, I simply HAD to test drive the thing (purely professional, of course).
I took it out on the road and ran it through the gears. Smooth as silk, but you had to feather the gas or it would spin the tires.
I'm not out five minutes when a guy in a Mustang wants to race me. Not good for a 17 year old with this much machinery!
The Mustang was three-four carlengths behind me as I passed the speed trap. The thought of ditching him was quickly forgotten - I had no doubt that there was no cop car that could catch me, but this machine was so well known (due to its previous owner) that I would never get away clean.
It took me a bit to get it pulled down and I was out of the car & leaning against it when the cop arrived. He silently motioned for me to come over to the cruiser and had me stick my head through the drivers window. There, the read-out for the radar was flashing "126" "126" "126".
In one of those Clint Eastwood quiet voices he asked me, "Can you tell me WHAT you were thinking?"
I offered him the lame, but entirely true, "I was just test driving it, officer!" excuses, but it was met with a big sigh and a shake of the head.
After a twenty minute conversation (he talked, I listened) he wrote me up for 19 over (saving me from a negligent citation).
I paid the fine without protest.
(I also convinced my brother to get rid of the car)

I was in one of those with the swivel front seats when we hit 3 large oaks at about 70 or so in a power slide in a neighborhood at 18 years of age.

I was behind the driver and my head actually penetrated that tiny rear window. The driver was thrown from the car.

We were blitzed naturally...all 5 of us.

We had some stitches and concussions and one broken leg (the guy in the middle in the back).

The car was totaled but the radio still kept playing "When the Levee Breaks"...it was awesome and surreal.

The driver's dad got there in his PJs before the cops and the cops had to pull him off his son by force...lol

No tickets...the cops were grateful they weren't having to scrape grey matter and teeth from the trees.

Ah the good ol days....riding stoned with Jesus obviously riding shotgun...we hit those trees at just the right angle or we would have been post toastie.

The guy in the passenger seat remarked nonchalantly as we careened off the road: "Here we go, get ready"....I think he's a DJ in Boston now.

I took my mom to see the car at the service station the next day....she got faint and nauseous...poor mom.

Yes it felt quite stable at 140. You're correct about acceleration. The speedo could move almost in time with the tach it seemed at times. Dropping it down into third at around 70 and kick'n it was a wonderful feeling.

0~60 in 5 or under - YUP!

Anybody who can drive drunk and not get stopped, crash or otherwise run afoul of the laws of physics must be one heck of a driver when he is sober.

It's possible: with a 2.7 rear-end ratio and an engine speed of 5500 RPM with a 30" circumference tire he would make it. I would guess he would have to be going a bit downgrade, though.

No bragging here (90-100 in a Lincoln Town Car in the upstate NY countryside: feels like 35) but your comment reminded me of my "whoa!" moment:
Blasting Zeppelin in my apt with friends when the '77 NYC blackout hit, resulting in Kashmir slowly winding down on the turntable- very freaky!

I had a somewhat surreal experience way back in 1966. To this day I have to remind myself that it actually did happen.

I was driving home from college in early June. My old 55 Ford had a 272 with a 2 barrel. It would do 110 in three different gears. High, high overdrive, and second overdrive.

I was cruising through the Eglin AFB reservation doing 110 in high od. I remember it was a clear nice night. As I got closer to home I happened to notice a few patches of fog. I didn't think about it but in my subconscious remembered that I had not seen any before.

As I came over a small rise suddenly I was enveloped in fog so thick I could see nothing, I was completely blind. I hit the brakes and felt the car swerve slightly to the right then felt the tires hitting the shoulder. I pulled back to the left then a second later I was in the clear.

I could see a red light flashing in the rear view mirror. The first thing to hit my mind was that I had had an accident and was dead, and I was somehow able to see the ambulance light flashing.

I then realized it was a mosquito spraying truck in the same lane I had been in doing 110 a few seconds before. When the brakes pulled right, I had overcorrected and passed the truck. It turned out one of my best friends was driving the truck.

It didn't really hit me until I got home just how lucky, or whatever it was, to have not been killed.

As I said earlier it is still difficult to realize it did happen. Seems just like a dream.

The Motorola can out run anything.

Although at that speed in a weak-signal area you might have trouble getting in an 'access request' on trunked system owing to a combinaiton of picket-fence/multi-path and doppler shift and it's effect on the EDAC (error coding) algorithm ...

Great story. The worst I did in my 'Bu was lose it on loose gravel going around a corner and I hit a parked car. It got worse ... the car belonged to a Jehovah's Witness and he proceeded to tell me all about his faith. The cops couldn't get there fast enough.

The day I hit 120+ was during my senior year in high school in 84. It was my brother's car then. I had a 74 Datsun B210. I had to run home to get a jacket and tie for picture day and the 210 was running like crap so I got the 'Bu from my bro and high-tailed it back to the school. Could've died that day the way I was driving. It's a good thing I ended up in the 'Bu, though, because I broke my wrist playing some after school football that day and driving the stick 210 wouldn't have been easy. ;o)
