NAPLES, Florida (AP) --Ave Maria University, the nation's first new Roman Catholic university in four decades, opened Tuesday with a Mass attended by the 101 students at its temporary campus.
The university was established by Domino's Pizza founder Thomas S. Monaghan, who has devoted himself to Roman Catholic causes since he sold the pizza chain in 1998.

Interesting. But was there really a shortage of Catholic colleges?

I am not confirmed a Catholic, but it is my understanding that Ave Maria University will make every effort to be faithful to the Magisterium, the teaching authority of the Church. Elsewhere, evidently, this is not always a high priority these days.

There are in the South for sure. We have one opening in Northern Georgia......can'tquite remember the name of it next fall. It makes me happy because I don't have to send my kids back North for college.
Now, if they could only open enough Catholic grade schools and high schools in Georgia!
