Although I am currently in the insurance business, I have no medical background. But, I do remember some flak a sportscaster took in the late '80s regarding a report that Caucasian and Negro muscle tissues were different which supposedly explained why whites were better at endurance sports and blacks better at sprinting. Anyone recall who the sportscaster was?

Some races are more prone to develop certain diseases while others are not. I am not sure of the cause but I do know that the phenomenon does exist. Of course, this still doesn't explain why the drug companies need this information.

There are clear genetic differences between races with respect to reaction to some drugs, at least this is the belief of the Japanese goverment. They will not approve drugs based on tests in other countries. I recall reading that they are considering an exception for large scale clinical trials on homogenious Japanese populations, such as those from Hawaii or California.

John Entine has written the definitive book on the subject.

This ignores the whole issue, anyway. I don't care if the drug companies need this info or not. If they need it, they should go out and collect it themselves.

The Govt. has NO business spending MY money to collect this data for the benefit of PRIVATE companies.

The real point is that Prop 54 makes exceptions for medical reasons. He might as well say he's opposed to Prop 54 because it outlaws hotdogs & apple pie. But I should be careful, I don't want to give them any ideas.

"I thought we were all the human race. Do drugs have different effects on particular races?

This is entirely possible. From what I remember, only blacks get sickle cell anemia.

And Asians for the most part are lactose intolerant. I remember seeing figures once indicating that over 80% of Asians are lactose intolerant, for Caucasians the figure was 15%

I don't know anything about the drug issue but when I was in college I was a sprinter and hurdler. Usually in a large meet I would be the only white person in the race.

Interestingly when you did see a white sprinter or hurdler, such as Richmond Flowers, he was usually pretty good.

On the other side of the coin you almost never saw a black discus thrower or shotputter. And just as in sprinting, when you did see the occassional one he was pretty good.

Different ethnicities do process pharmaceuticals differently- this whole issue is an emerging one in the pharmaceutical industry. But the pharmaceutical companies already know this. I can see now way in which California can help simply by collecting demographic data.

I have worked for one of the largest pharmaceutical companies in the U.S. and have never heard of anything like this.
