Our Voting Intellect on Display

Posted on 09/03/2003 5:58:57 PM PDT by Two-Bits

When you read stuff like this, it is easier to understand why our elected officials have such a hard time running the government...The following are actual stories provided by a retiring Washington, D.C. travel agent of 30+ years:

I had a New Hampshire Congresswoman ask for an aisle seat on the airplane so that her hair wouldn't get messed up by being near the window.

I got a call from a Candidate's Staffer, who wanted to go to Capetown. I started to explain the length of the flight and the passport information then she interrupted me with, "I'm not trying to make you look stupid, but Capetown is in Massachusetts." Without trying to make her look like the stupid one, I calmly explained, "Cape Cod is in Massachusetts, Capetown is in Africa." Her response...(click).

A Senior Vermont Congressman called, furious about a Florida package we did. I asked what was wrong with the vacation in Orlando. He said he was expecting an ocean-view room. I tried to explain that is not possible, since Orlando is in the middle of the state. He replied, "Don't lie to me. I looked on the map, and Florida is a very thin state!!!"

An Illinois Congresswoman called last week. She needed to know how it was possible that her flight from Detroit left at 8:20am and got into Chicago at 8:33am. I tried to explain that Michigan was an hour ahead of Illinois, but she could not understand the concept of time zones. Finally, I told her the plane went very fast, and she bought that!

A New York lawmaker called and asked, "Do airlines put your physical description on your bag so they know who's luggage belongs to who?" I said, "No, why do you ask?" She replied, "Well, when I checked in with the airline, they put a tag on my luggage that said [FAT], and I'm overweight, I think that is very rude." After putting her on hold for a minute while I "looked into it" (I was actually laughing) I came back and explained the airport code for Fresno, CA is (FAT), and that the airline was just putting a destination tag on her luggage.

A Senator's aide called in inquiring about a trip package to Hawaii. After going over all the cost info, she asked, "Would it be cheaper to fly to California and then take the train to Hawaii?"

I just got off the phone with a freshman Congressman who asked, "How do I know which plane to get on?" I asked him what exactly he meant, to which he replied, "I was told my flight number is 823, but none of these darn planes have numbers on them."

A Lady Senator called and said, "I need to fly to Pepsi-Cola, FL. Do I have to get on one of those little computer planes?" I asked if she meant fly to Pensacola, FL on a commuter plane. She said, "Yeah, whatever!!"

A Senior Senator called and had a question about the documents he needed in order to fly to China. After a lengthy discussion about passports, I reminded him he needed a visa. "Oh no I don't, I've been to China many times and never had to have one of those." I double checked and sure enough, his stay required a visa. When I told him this he said, "Look, I've been to China four times and every time they have accepted my American Express!"

A New Mexico Congresswoman called to make reservations, "I want to go from Chicago to Rhino, New York." The agent was at a loss for words. Finally, the agent: "Are you sure that's the name of the town?" "Yes, what flights do you have?" replied the lady. After some searching, the agent came back with, "I'm sorry, ma'am, I've looked up every airport code in the country and I can't find a Rhino anywhere." The lady retorted, "Oh don't be silly! Everyone knows where it is. Check your map!" The agent scoured a map of the state of New York and finally offered, "You don't mean Buffalo, do you? "That's it! I knew it was a big animal," she admitted.

Now you know why government is in the shape that it's in and we the people elect them into office.

Don't get upset. You elected them or someone like them

The California fisaco is a perfect example of why the above is normal. We do not vote for qualified candidates anymore, only those that can win.

Finally, someone who realizes that the problem is the voters. But the voters will still poin the finger at the politicians rather than admitting their mistakes.

With the mess in California being what it is.

I finally saw the true face of the Republican Party.

As Reagan once said "the (Democrat)Party left me" I feel the same way right now.

I always said the Democrats lost big time when they were willing to compromise their integrity and stability for a Leader such as Clinton. How could you respect anything they believe in when they were willing to have someone of no character or morales to lead them.

I was proud of the Republican Party because we cleanned our own house. We were not morally bankrupt. We knew a person's character was important or did we???

It amazes me that if all the Republicans would just get behind the Conservative Candidate that is qualified to turn this State around. We would win BIG TIME!!! The liberals know it that is why Arnold is running to make sure we do not win.

I always thought Republicans were smarter than this and could see a scam a mile away but I was wrong.....

As much as I would like to agree with you. I'm afraid not. All you have to do listen to what they say and trust me, brains is definately not one of their assets.

Add to this small sample of stupidity a high proportion of depravity among the 'elect.'

With your kinda of thinking we will have Governor Bustamonte. I am not willing to risk that, just to make the point that I am a purist conservative. Sometimes you have to accept something less that perfection and I believe that is what must be done in this case.

This is so true. It saddens me this is the legacy we are leaving for our Grandchildren.

Don't put up a fight, don't stand for principle, just win at any cost. I saw a glimmer of light (Republican Party) at the end of the tunnel, now I realize it was only a freight train.

If you can rationalize your principle for this false belief. Than you go right ahead because you are playing right into their hands.

LOL! That's my favorite!

Blanche Lincoln? I could see someone thinking she said that with her accent. I kinda like to listen to her speak myself, not what she says, but she has a nice voice.

I was having a friend (a liberal) using my rotary dial phone once to make a long distance call. The number had been written down by someone else. He ask me in the middle of his dialing which dot represented the dashes in the phone number. It took me a while to gather he was referring to the dots in the middle of the finger holes representing the numbers two through nine on the dial. This was before touch-tone was widely available. I will have to bow and say, "YES!" people can be THAT stupid.

NH Congresswoman Kay Chandler (NH-2, I think), aka Kristin Scott Thomas in Random Hearts

I'm 100% sure that "Kay" is the only congresswoman NH has had in the past 30-40 years. In fact, I'm 99.9% sure she's the ONLY congresswoman NH has ever had.

I must respectfully disagree. The article mentions 'an Illinois Congresswoman.' Carol Mosely-Braun is certainly stupid and ignorant enough to make this sort of mistake. And remember Maxine Waters, who on a tour of the National Air and Space Museum demonstrated clearly that she was unaware that men had never been to Mars. Now, that's stupid.

Not to vouch necessarily for our elected officials intelligence, but that joke has been running around for a long time. This is the first time I've seen the dummies described as congresscritters, though.

I'm ashamed to admit that was Texas Congresswoman Sheila Jackson Lee. (D) after her name and yes she is that stupid.

Oh, of course you're right, I stand corrected. Sometimes it's hard to distinguish between the stupidity and exploitativeness of Sheila Jackson Lee and the stupidity and exploitativeness of Maxine Waters.
