Galt's gulch, the concept of individual secession in the context of patriotism (as opposed to expatriating) is probably what attracted me to the idea in the first place.

I was particularly attracted to the notion after I read "Atlas Shrugged". However, you need a solid group of industrious, like-minded people to make it work. I'm afraid that some Free Staters may be malcontents who would not pull their weight, leaving everyone in the same situation as before.

interestingly, a place like idaho or wyoming - within the american context already fairly free - might be LESS attractive, because the change would not be as radical. a place like vermont has a small population, many of which are libertarian, but which have been shut out recently by the greens and socialists. wins in vt would be big in the change factor.

that said, what about "outsiders" going to a place like wyoming or idaho? could they become state reps., city council members, etc.? sometimes only the locals can succeed politically...i guess that would have to be part of the calculation, wouldn't it?

Yeah, but if they are dedicated enough to relocate, they will definately be motivated to at least vote. And that is what is important. Heck if only 5% of the 20k got actively involved in the politics/action part of the equasion, that could make a huge change along with the added votes. Could spring a large percentage of the great undecided that usually decides most elections. Also, like it has been said, "If you build it, they will come...". Would be great to use the leverage to dismantle that states welfare apparatus, thus encouraging deadbeat Dems to leave the state for greener pastures, like Kali...:-)...JFK

I see your point, but is the point of the FSP to make radical nation wide change or is it to take a state and make it a place that conservatives will go to live productive lives? I must admit that I dont know what the ultimate aim is, but I would rather see the project take a state and make it OURS, feds, dems, commies, and deadbeats be damned. If Idaho is already close to what we want, we could just go there and finish the job. When the rest of the nation gets tired of eating our dust, then they could make the proper changes...JFK

Logically, I don't think it would be.

NH has a population approaching 1.3 million--20K people would not even make a dent.

If I were them, I would be considering a state with an even smaller population, such as Wyoming, Vermont, or even Delaware (all under 1 million people).

i believe the aim is to succeed in a state, to give us a place to live that is as free as possible.

thus, it is more rational, isn't it, to take an idaho and, as you put it, finish the job.

i also believe, as you said in your previous post, that if they build it, we will come. there is a lot of truth in that.

from what i can gather from the web site, NH is still in the running.

it seems like the eventual winner will be NH, or Idaho....but that is opinion...I am just going by what I can gather on the web site.

My sentimental favorite would be Vermont. I mean if you can make a state free AND beat up on a bunch of socialists in the process, that is even more fun that just making a state free....

As we said on the construction of the Alaska Pipeline. For a work camp of 200, there are 20 who carry the camp. This would be about the ratio in any large project.

I simply cannot see a scenario where a state parasite would want to live in the Free State. It's just not a major concern of mine. The concern I have is that charlatans who have 'nothing left to lose' maybe interested as opposed to familiy community types like myself who wish only to raise their children in a community that loves the liberty so treasured by their ancestors and debased by the the last 4-6 generations.

I am thinking Idaho because it is close to me, and also close to Montana, another state on the short list. Maybe get a two-fer and move west and take over Washington. But Idaho does have a seaport in Lewiston, until the enviro-commies destroy the Snake River dams...JFK
