Members of Congress often use weekend plane trips back to their districts as a way to unwind after a hectic bout of lawmaking. Which could explain why Rep. Sheila Jackson Lee (D-Texas) demanded a whole row of seats to herself on a recent Continental flight from Washington to Houston.

Jackson Lee usually gets first-class upgrades from the airline. But on this particular flight first class was full. After cabin attendants delivered the bad news and showed her to the coach section, Jackson Lee exploded, said one witness.

“When she saw that she had to sit with other people, she started shouting that she was in Congress and worked hard. She was really loud. Everybody in the plane could hear.”

Frequent flyers say that such outbursts are common whenever Jackson Lee is on board. The Continental crew seemed to take the whole situation in stride. Attendants scurried around to find her other accommodations, and once Jackson Lee got her own row of seats she quieted down.

Later in the flight she even paid a friendly visit to the people she had refused to sit with. According to a nearby passenger, Jackson Lee “handed out her business cards and invited them to stop by her office.”

Why the assumption? This is the type of thinking that continues the racism monster in the U.S.

Because it was the only possible answer. He had no problem sitting in the seat until he saw a black man sit next to him. The problem wasn't his seat, it was his neighbor.

I can see it now. I stand up and castigate her for being an obnoxious member of Congress and I'd be all over the media the next day for making a racist attack on a poor black woman.

Unfortunately, that is a possibliity since this trip was FROM DC TO TX.
If this flight had originated in TX, there might have been someone with a pair onboard.

I once was at DFW airport and passed a gate for a flight that was going to Washington. As I watched, I saw Watts, the Republican from Oklahoma waiting in line for his turn at the ticket agent, just like everyone else, while the democrat from San Antonio (senior guy, Hispanic, named the conevention center after him, son inherited his seat) was hustled by 2 or 3 airline people through a back door to get on the same plane. The difference between Republicans and scumbags!

I thought Continental had banned her for a prior tantrum (the Queen incident) where they dropped her purse out the door onto the tarmac. Too bad they changed their policy. And too bad they coddled her.

This same exact behavior by any of us 'little people' would invariably result in being tackled, beaten, shackled, arrested and charged with a felony of interfering with a flight crew.
