Schwarzenegger Statement on the Endorsement of the Howard Jarvis Taxpayer Association

“I am honored to announce that I have received the endorsement of the Howard Jarvis Taxpayers Association. I would like to thank the members of the Association, because this means a great deal to me and to our campaign.

“I have been a firm supporter of Proposition 13 for many years. I continue to strongly support it, and will continue to defend it. Think what a worse mess California would be in today if not for Prop. 13.

“The Association and I worked together on Prop. 49 and now we are working together again. Our elected officials have created a budget crisis, and an economic situation that is driving businesses and jobs to other states.

“All this was entirely avoidable if Sacramento had followed the common sense principles of Howard Jarvis and Ronald Reagan. They believed and I believe that we don’t have a multi-billion dollar debt because we aren’t taxed enough; we have a multi-billion dollar debt because we spend too much.

“Sacramento cannot say no to higher spending and taxes. Well, I can, and that is what I intend to do as governor.

“Again, I want to thank the Association for this important endorsement, and I look forward to working together with the Association to bring some sanity to Sacramento’s spending and taxing.”

If the HJTA thinks Arnold will stand up for taxpayers' interests, who the heck am I to argue with them?

Ahhhh, the "Warren Buffet" DNC talking point, yes...

This was Warren Buffet's statement at the Economic Recovery Council press conference... he spoke after Arnold gave an initial statement which was heavily anti-taxes, pro-cuts, anti-bureaucracy strangling business, anti-litigation, revamping Workers' Compensation, etc.

--

Warren Buffet

I first became aware of just how bad the fiscal situation was in California and how important it was for leadership that would attack the problem, early in June. At that time, California needed to sell 11 billion dollars in warrants. Those are securities that come due in less than a year, approximately a year, and California found out that its credit card was no longer acceptable in the investment world. They presented it and it was handed back to them and they were told, the state was told, to get somebody to guarantee that you'll have access to the credit markets in the next year. So they got a syndicate of seven investment banks led by Merrill Lynch and 84 million dollars was paid, not to borrow money, but simply to assure investors that someone somewhere would lend money to California in the next 12 months. If they don't, Merrill Lynch and their group will get a very, very hefty fee for providing the money.

So, when the state gets to the position where a syndicate of investment banks are regarded as a better credit than what I believe is the richest and most important state in the union, a change is needed. That change is going to require someone determined who is credible to the investment world to present a plan for a balanced budget and, as Arnold said, this wasn't created in a couple weeks and it doesn't get solved in a couple weeks but within the next year; because if June comes around next year and that problem has not been addressed, it won't be solved for 84 million dollars and it won't be solved for 184 million dollars.

Credit is like oxygen, you know when you have it you don't even notice it and, when you don't have it, is the only thing you are thinking about and we got very close to that point in California in June. And without the problem being addressed, it will be around here in spades next June. .

There are 35 million plus Californians counting on leadership. They are going to have to feed their families tomorrow and next week and next month and next year. And they are going to feed them only in one way and that is if they have jobs. And they are only going to have jobs in one way, also, and that is if employers expand their businesses and come to California just like they did in the past years.

This state has provided millions and millions and millions of jobs over the years but, particularly in the recent couple of years, the trend has gone the other way and that has to be reversed because 35 millions people aren't going to eat otherwise and they are going to need jobs.

And after looking at the situation, I felt only new leadership could get that job done and take care of those 35 million people and that's why I'm out here with Arnold Schwarzenegger. Thanks.

Warren Buffett my ass. If he's all that influential, no way the HJTA would have endorsed Arnold. And he wasn't brought in to mess around with Prop. 13.

Didn't mean to flood you on that last reply LOL

I just thought it would be helpful to slide it in before the McClintock-brigade started hollering about Buffet seriously ;-)

The HJTA-PAC would like any of the three major GOP candidates, but ended up making the difficult choice to endorse Schwarzenegger -- not because he's any better on taxpayer or Prop 13 issues, but because he's more electable and will bring more people to the HJTA. Here's the HJTA-PAC endorsement full-text. Read it yourself:

Who Should Be the Next Governor?

DATE:  August 28, 2003

TO:  Fellow Taxpayers

FROM:  Jon Coupal, HJTA President

You don't need to be told that California taxpayers face the
greatest crisis since the passage of Proposition 13, twenty-five
years ago. Backed by special interests, inside and outside of
government, the Legislature and the governor have irresponsibly
increased spending so fast that that there is no way that revenue can
keep up without massive tax increases. Politicians, who want to
continue the lavish spending, have become so brazen that for the first
time many are now talking about repealing Proposition 13! This
category includes Lt. Governor Cruz Bustamante.

The Howard Jarvis Taxpayers Association endorsed the recall of Gray
Davis because we believe that gross incompetence is grounds for
removing the governor!

With the expectation that the recall will be successful, taxpayers
must now make a decision that will be critical to the state for years
to come. Who should be the next governor?

The Howard Jarvis Taxpayers Association, a membership organization
founded by Howard Jarvis, does not endorse candidates. However, the
legally separate Howard Jarvis Taxpayers Association Political Action
Committee (HJTA-PAC), also established by Howard Jarvis, does support
candidates.

In reviewing the field, and focusing on the serious candidates,
HJTA-PAC found only three that were acceptable to taxpayers.

State Senator Tom McClintock has a record on tax issues second to none
in Sacramento.

Peter Ueberroth has proven himself as an outstanding administrator, a
quality severely lacking in the governor's office.

Arnold Scharzenegger has achieved the American Dream, starting at the
bottom as an immigrant and rising to the top of his profession, while
achieving success in business.

All are unequivocal in their public support for Proposition 13.

Warren Buffett, the world's second richest man and an advisor to
Scharzenegger, suggested recently that Californians were not paying
high enough property taxes. Outrageous! However, Arnold Scharzenegger
has been a Proposition 13 supporter for twenty-five years, has
publicly and privately reiterated his total support for Proposition
13, and has rebuked Buffett for his comments.

Unfortunately, having three good candidates is also a problem for
taxpayers: How do we return fiscal sanity to the governor's office
with the taxpayer vote divided? This is why HJTA-PAC undertook the
extremely difficult process of trying to pick the best candidate for
the October 7 election -- an election that will either confirm Gray
Davis or elect a successor from a wide field without the benefit of a
primary election.

Ultimately, the decision was made based on confirmed support for
Proposition 13, a positive program that includes respect for
taxpayers, the ability to reach out and bring new supporters to the
taxpayers' cause, and electability in a free-for-all election.

The Howard Jarvis Taxpayers Association Political Action Committee is
endorsing Arnold Schwarzenegger for governor. We hope that taxpayers
will support our choice. We believe he will be an outstanding governor
for taxpayers and that he has the best chance to keep the state out of
the hands of the enemies of Proposition 13.

In addition to endorsing him, we are strongly recommending that
Schwarzenegger find a prominent place for the wise counsel of both
McClintock and Ueberroth in his administration.

However, we want all Proposition 13 supporters to know that if you
back another candidate, we respect your decision. And if you do
support another candidate, we hope you will respect the process we
went through to make our difficult choice.

I predict....let's see..... this one! "Howard Jarvis Taxpayers' Association are just a bunch of RINO's!"

Let's see...We're told that Arnold isn't a conservative, and is a "Republican In Name Only" (RINO), but he's supported by conservative Congressmen Chris Cox, Dana Rohrabacher, and David Dreier, former Congressman Bob Dornan, conservative talkshow hosts Michael Medved and Hugh Hewitt, the Howard Jarvis Taxpayers Association, and now Thomas Sowell.

Arnold was also personally endorsed by conservative economist Milton Friedman (his theories were followed by Reagan and Thatcher).

We're being pragmatic and choosing the lesser of two evils. Large Breasts is a racist and committed socialist. Next to him, considering how wacked out California is today, Arnold looks down right conservative.

B-b-but Schwarzenegger is just a liberal communist socialist Nazi RINO!

He's no different from Cruz/Davis/Hillary!

He'll be the worst thing that ever happened to the GOP and/or California!

And all the McClintock scorched-earthers are all so much more knowledgeable, experienced, committed, accomplished, and smarter than David Dreier, Chris Cox, John Campbell, Hugh Hewitt, Michael Medved, Thomas Sowell, the Hoover Institute fellows on his advisory committee, George Schulz, Dana Rohrabacher, and the Jarvis PAC!
