...I just don't know why she got medals and an early discharge for suffering less than what many WWII and Vietnam vets suffered.

Give her a break. The reason is: she's a woman. Because she's the first woman to suffer such extensive injuries in combat, and then to survive capture...it's news.

Her injuries--were they the result of being thrown from a vehicle, or from fighting off the enemy.If it is the former, that doesn't make one a hero. If it is the latter, then there is no question she was doing her duty.

Her heroism may indeed be related to surviving capture, but, then, again, we have no information about that to form an opinion. She can't be a hero just because she is a female soldier.
