This is certainly good news for wheelchair bound Americans.

To digress, maybe I'm too SciFi oriented but it seems that this platform could hold strong promise for fielding automated warriors.

That is to say: Un-manned Ground Combat Vehicles. (UGCVs to coin a term)

I've seen video of this wheelchair. It can actually pivot its wheelbase and balance on two wheels (like the Segway), while lifting its occupant. It lets the occupant reach the top shelf in a supermarket. Pretty neat.

Doctors say the system could be revolutionary, but it is so complex that the FDA decided the wheelchair would require a doctor's prescription and special training to drive.

Let's see, it's not a food, it's not a drug, but the FDA has to poke their f'n nose into the deal. Am I just a grouch?
