Hot dogs, live music and introspective angst were the fare for more than 1,000 union members at the Louisville Zoo yesterday as they pondered a Labor Day holiday whose meaning diminishes each year.

"The general public's thoughts have declined as far as what they think labor has done for them," said Joe Wise, a 30-year union member and business manager for the Greater Louisville Building and Construction Trades Council. "This nation was made great on the backs of its workers. But in our society, we tend to have short memories."

I know what they have done for me.

Better prison labor than Union labor. At least prisoners want to be free.

Francis Angelo, left, and Mike Bucholz hold up picket
signs Thursday as union members protest city budget cuts
in Niagara Square.

The leader of a national labor group presented a $50,000 check at a City Hall rally Thursday to fight what speakers described as the "union-busting" tactics of the state control board.

"We are here to do battle. And we will battle with the mayor and with the control board one day longer than they are ready to do battle," AFSCME International President Gerald McEntee shouted to the cheers of nearly 400 city workers.

Demonstrators waved signs that read "Control Board . . . Ouija Board - One and the Same," and "More Services, Less Control Board." The rally attracted union representatives from other regions, including New York City and Utica.

They will be the last ones standing when the city of Buffalo files Bankruptcy

My friends old roommate works for a local town here, and he has to be a member of the public employees union, AFSCME. Notice the article didn't specify WHICH union this was, just "AFSCME". Read that as PUBLIC EMPLOYEES UNION.

I have the January/February 2004 issue of their magazine, entitled "Taking Back The White House" with a smiling Howard "Screaming" Dean on the cover. (YEEAAARRRGH!)

what a joke...
