I was reading Footfall before bedtime a number of years ago, and at about 2:00am I woke up in a cold sweat, and jumped out of bed and looking for the shotgun (which we didn't own at the time) calling to my wife to grab a gun, gather up the cats and hide in the closet.
The book was that good.
