Now it's Lott's turn on the chopping block. That at least appears to be the gun-grabbers' plan.
John Lott handled them the axe though, with the whole
Mary Rosh affair. Posting under a false name to praise your own work?

The personal attacks (a la Coulter) continue against John Lott.

That was bad judgement, but it does not call into question the data he collected nor his analysis of it. In contrast, Bellesiles is a fraud - the historical record was misrepresented when it existed at all and fabricated when it didn't. (And, Bellesiles won the Bancroft prize too - even while questions of his accuracy had already been raised.)

Posting under a false name to praise your own work?Admittedly, that was a silly thing to do, but I have read that Walt Whitman and Edgar Allan Poe were also in the habit of writing rhapsodic reviews of their own work under pseudonyms. That too was silly, but their place in history does not seem to have suffered undue harm.
It's important to keep things in perspective.

Richard Poe is his real name.
This is in regard to John Lott. I didn't know about it till I read some of the anti-Lott blog sites, which are quite rabid.
Its mainly about attacking the messenger, and a lot of fluff about "coding" errors.

Richard Poe is his real name. Sheesh.I think lelio was referring to Lott's use of the pseudonym Mary Rosh to defend his work online.
To: Joe Brower
I believe the reference is to John Lott posting under a different name, under Mary Rosh. Then some idiot made a John Lott website with JL's likeness morphed into drag, with bogus JL questions and answers, etc.
It it not pretty, but the internet is a wonderous thing.

Matt Bracken is my real name, but you can also call me Travis McGee and I won't mind.

BTW, my books were delivered today, and I am beginning my mailing marathon covering six months of pre-orders.

Matt,
Unfortunately, some of the guys who read your M/S, support your efforts, and work to help you succeed are too paranoid to let their real names be associated with your work!
(A sad commentary on our times, when rational people fear being associated with the publication of ideas critical of a hypothetical abuse by a renegade splinter of our government.)

OK, gotcha. I see how I misconstrued lelio's comments, Richard. I percieved he was referring to you and your blog. In the past, I myself have read my writings claiming they were done by a fictional someone, just to get an honest opinion from my audience. It worked.
By the way, great book!
Yes, I have been quite aware of the whole affair regarding the "John Lott/Mary Rosh" bit -- I have followed it rather closely and send a few posts about it to my RKBA mail-list. The radical left will never hestitate to exploit any weakness, real or imaginary, or inflate any potential misbehavior, however small, into something they hope they can use against good folks like John Lott. After all, he has the audacity to question their leftist ideals. Good things they don't like guns, elsewise they might just have him shot. < /sarcasm>
Of course, they feel free to lie, cheat, steal -- hey, whatever they feel they can get away with, to promote their agenda. After all, "the ends justifies the means" is one of the primary tenents of statism.
The double-standards of the anti-gun left are painfully obvious to anyone who's paying attention. That would be us, eh?

About 20% of my pre-orders are either in cash or anonymous postal money orders. No problemo, I understand perfectly.
It's kind of a shame, because my entire novel is an exploration of the true meaning of patriotism and loyalty in an era of creeping tyranny.

Have you (Richard) looked into John Donohue's
The Final Bullet in the Body of the More Guns, Less Crime Hypothesis report? Its based on the Kovandzic and Marvell findings as referenced on
Tim Lambert's blog.
Here's a gem from it:
While gun advocates point out that permit holders only rarely commit murder, simply knowing that Sean Penn hasn't killed anyone tells us nothing about whether the guns he was carrying only because he was able to get a concealed gun permit will be used to kill, rape, rob, or assault others.
So in other words: guns are evil evil evil and who knows who's going to get their hands on them?
