Activists file Guinn recall papers...(Nevada Governor in trouble?)

A fringe group of ultra-conservatives upset with Kenny Guinn's approval of the largest tax increase in state history has filed papers to begin recall proceedings against the popular Republican governor.

Emboldened by recall efforts in neighboring California, organizers now have 90 days to collect more than 128,000 signatures, or 25 percent of those who cast ballots in the 2002 general election.

Chairman of The Committee to Recall Governor Guinn, Tony Dane, admits it's going to be a daunting task to come up with so many signatures, but he says it's possible.

In response, Guinn issued a statement saying, "Nevadans expect their elected officials to make difficult decisions that are not always popular with everyone.'' He also says he has "great faith in the wisdom of the people of Nevada.''

Guinn was re-elected in 2002 with 68 percent of the vote.

No statewide recall effort has ever succeeded, and no Nevada governor has ever been the subject of a recall election.

The recall would cost Nevada five million dollars. Washoe County Registrar Dan Burk says it would cost the county time and resources that they just don't have. "It's going to cost us to hire about 900 people to work at the polls, we've got a tremendous number of signitures we'd have to verify that will come from the petition if there's any attraction," says . That would cost between $250,000 and $350,000.

Burk says there's no money budgeted for a recall. He says the cash would have to come from a county emergency fund and that would completely drain it. Burk believes the recall is fiscally irresponsible. "It takes away from addressing the real issues here," he says.

Unlike California, no prominent Nevada leaders have endorsed this recall. Even business leaders in Reno and Sparks who opposed the governor's record tax plan say a recall goes too far. "You don't recall a governor in light of his tax package. You disagree with him, finish the process and move forward," says Chamber of Commerce CEO Harry York.

"It's just too drastic and I think if you watch what's happening in California it creates utter chaos and we don't want that or need that, we need to be a stable state," he added.

A fringe group of ultra-conservatives upset with Kenny Guinn's approval of the largest tax increase in state history...

Who the hell works at KRNV? Are these people Harry Reid's media sycophants or something?

Look, the fact of the matter is that this REPUBLICAN Governor is increasing TAXES, and the people have A RIGHT to recall--it is provided for in the law, you nincompoops...something Gray Davis, another tax raiser, is LEARNING BIG TIME.

I am amazed that the conservatives in Nevada aren't lambasting their media with the facts: the largest tax increase in state history from a REPUBLICAN??

I'm a Recovering_Democrat, and I know that I won't vote for a Democrat, but this Republican needs to be booted out of office.

This tax thing seems to generate such ... ahhh ... revolting responses from people.

Almost as if a people felt un-represented by their alleged representatives.

This could prove interesting.

A fringe group of ultra-conservatives?? <snort RINO's and their Democrat friends must think most Nevadans belong to a fringe group. That will only fire up conservatives' resolve to hand Kenny "Gray Davis" Guinn his head. Tally ho!

All you need to know is that Guinn has spent his life working for the Nevada Power Company. That is his history; and that is where his loyalties lie. Big Business. Not to worry, people in Nevada are too busy,to take time to sign a petition.
