Aug. 28 (Bloomberg) -- Halliburton Co., the company formerly headed by U.S. Vice President Dick Cheney, has received more than $1.7 billion in contracts in connection with the war in Iraq, the Washington Post reported on its Web site.

Halliburton's Brown and Root unit received about $1 billion in contracts for work for the military through mid-August, the newspaper said, citing data from the Army Joint Munitions Command. The company also received $705 million for oil field rehabilitation work for the Army Corps of Engineers, the newspaper said, citing an unidentified corps spokesman.

You know as I read this I just kinda don't know what to think anymore.

I am a geoscientist who is heavily involved in the water well drilling industry. Baroid Drilling Inc. which is a division of Haliburton produces some of the best sodium montmorillonite clay products (bentonite) on the market for the sanitary sealing of all types of wells and the abandonment of these wells. They also have great drilling products.

I have even worked with the scientists who manufacture the products and the lab testing that was done on the products. They have never pushed their products down my throat and always wanted to just give me the "facts" and not their "opinions".

Unlike what some political people think and based on just this division alone, I would hope this company is working in Iraq.

Isn't Haliburton's only real competition for the work some French company whose name I can't recall? If so, why shouldn't Haliburton get the contract? I'd be darned before I'd let the work go to the blasted French.

Media Barf Alert!

No where in the reporting of all the "contrats" Haliburton gets is it ever mentioned that Haliburton is the largest Oil Rig maintenance company in the world and that they have been in this business for decades and decades. One wonders if these reports would get as much air time had Algore been a high offical in their organization?

Unfortunately a large percentage of the American people are as vacuous as the media dupes reporting this type of drivel. They conclude that the awarding of these contracts have nothing to do with the companies' abilities to do the work properly at the contracted price, but rather that it is simply a pay back for political favors.

Yes you are right for the most part.

For the product of bentonite there are other American companies (note I am a Canadian) that sell such WYO-Ben, Inc. and Volclay.

I should add that these company representatives have been very helpful to me too. But say WYO-Ben needs testing on the permeability of a material - then WYO-Ben, Inc. will use Bariods lab in Texas. Who knows maybe behind the wall of paper they are owned by Halliburton too. But my point is these guys are good at what they do in the oil and water well industry and I would hope that they of all people are working hard to restore Iraq's only main source for its economy.

The only thing I learned from the above article is that the author is a very bitter, unhappy person. Good.

That's a very important fact in this article.

Oh, the lefties would never let a thing like a fact get in their way. It would destroy their little game. The game is to imply and insinuate that Cheney is getting gazillions of dollars funneled to his bank account under the table. The way the lefties have hoped to play this is to have the word 'Halliburton' become synonomous with the word 'Satan' in the minds of the sheople.

The author of this article conveniently left out the fact that BILL CLINTON also contracted with Halliburton during his term...but that was ok then....

I guess this Bloomberg employee doesn't have google and doesn't know about Sen Feinstein's URS Corp. You see, "URS joins Halliburton, Bechtel and other major US corporations with close ties to Washington that has received major [government] contracts" according to many google hits. Yes, I know about Mr. Feinstein, Richard Blum.
