In a October 11, 2000 editorial, the St. Petersburg Times endorsed Larry Crow for the Florida House District 49 seat representing North Pinellas County.

On April 8, 2001, the same newspaper ran a story describing the Crow's attempt to pass legislation that would:

"Require written parental permission for the administration of non-prescription medication.

"Provide that a student is exempt from certain services under the school health services program if a parent requests such exemption in writing.

"Limit transportation of a student to a medical treatment facility without parental consent."

Crow is said to have developed the legislation with input from the Pinellas County Medical Society and the local Church of Scientology.

The article describes Crow as a Baptist, and a four term Republican legislator "....whose district includes parts of Pinellas Park, Largo, Clearwater, Dunedin, Palm Harbor and Tarpon Springs."

Seat 49 is now held by John Quinones

It appears former state Rep. Larry Crow remains a figure in Pinellas County politics. He is quoted in a St. Petersburb Times article as recently as August 29, 2003.

Mr. Crow is a new name in this cast of characters participating in the state sanctioned murder of my sister in spirit, Terri Schindler Schiavo.

I thought you might want to review his credentials, as limited to internet sources.

"The Pope has done nothing to my knowledge about the acceptance of euthanasia. The Catholics do not consider the removal of a feeding tube to be euthanasia."

Sorry, but that's not true! The Catholic Church is very much AGAINST euthanasia, and the Pope and the bishops have spoken out many times in condemning it. The only thing the Church allows is for the cessation of extraordinary treatments, designed to prolong life, and when these treatments would be unduly burdensome and painful, AND ONLY when the patient consents. Food and hydration are NOT considered to be "treatments", but ordinary means of preserving life.

Here are some examples of the Church's teachings.

Sacred Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith: "Declaration on Euthanasia" May 5, 1980

It is necessary to state firmly once more that nothing and no one can in any way permit the killing of an innocent human being, whether a fetus or an embryo, an infant or an adult, an old person, or one suffering from an incurable disease, or a person who is dying. Furthermore, no one is permitted to ask for this act of killing, either for himself or herself or for another person entrusted to his or her care, nor can he or she consent to it, either explicitly or implicitly. Nor can any authority legitimately recommend or permit such an action. For it is a question of the violation of the divine law, an offense against the dignity of the human person, a crime against life, and an attack on humanity.

Excerpt from Catechism of the Catholic Church:

section 2277: Whatever its motives and means, direct euthanasia consists in putting an end to the lives of handicapped, sick, or dying persons. It is morally unacceptable.
Thus an act or omission which, of itself or by intention, causes death in order to eliminate suffering constitutes a murder gravely contrary to the dignity of the human person and to the respect due to the living God, his Creator.

Thanks, Robert.

cast of characters is right.

If only the good guys would wear white hats and the bad guys wear black.

I'd be able to tell them apart more easily.

" The learned fool writes nonsense in better language than the unlearned - but it's still nonsense" -- Benjamin Franklin

sarasmom,
Your self-indulgent post ( 2234 ) is on it's face suggestive of your need to re-read my attempts to give attention to the potential jeopardy some well intentioned ( I hope ) but ignorant FReepers were blindly trapping themselves.

It's sadly clear to me that my altruistic efforts fell on 'deaf ears', as I was met with unbridled scorn from those having the greatest need for the advice I offered.

Please, sarasmom, in your own interest, read without prejudice Georgia high court considers online libel suit

Consider how this action might have a bearing upon how you chose to belittle, or worst, label another with 'crook', 'criminal', 'thief', or any term that mirrors your antipathy for someone you bitterly hold in contempt, when you next post a comment on FR.

Write smart. Cover your assets. This was and is my message to those not versed in the art of name calling.

One phone call prunes Tampa senator's job [excerpt] St. Petersburg Times, April 28, 2000
TALLAHASSEE -- Sen. John Grant had a nicely feathered nest awaiting when term limits forced him from office. Then Gov. Jeb Bush stepped in, and it got a little less cushy.

At the end of this legislative session, the Tampa Republican will become the executive director of the statewide Public Guardianship Office. Bush appointed Grant to the job in November.

It was a pretty good deal then and it was about to get sweeter after a colleague of Grant's decided that Grant deserved a bigger salary than the governor and should be allowed to work from his hometown of Tampa.

Rep. Larry Crow, R-Palm Harbor, filed a bill that would have set Grant's salary at $125,000 a year and expanded the program he will oversee. Over the objections of Democrats, committees in both the House and the Senate signed off on the idea.

Then Crow got a call from the governor.

On Thursday, Crow killed his own bill.

"The governor was adamant -- he said, "If you pass it, I will veto it,' " Crow said. "He thought the public perception was bad." [snip]

The new guardianship program Grant will lead is designed to help some of the state's most vulnerable citizens conduct their daily lives.

Public guardians are appointed to handle the financial business and make decisions for certain elderly or disabled citizens who can no longer handle their own affairs. Reports of theft and abuse on the part of guardians have been widespread for years.

Grant will review the needs of the state's 67 counties and complete a report on the situation by Jan. 1, 2001. Legislators envision the appointment of a guardian in each of the state's 20 judicial circuits.

Why is Crow standing for Terri at this point in time. The issue has been common knowledge in their community since 1990.

Is it possible that the local brokers are so up tight that they are all trying to find redeeming cover from the negative fall-out this unholy local alliance is about to face? Is the proverbial stuff about to hit the fan? Can it be the play book has been opened for all to see, and there's no way to defend against our attack? Did Crow test the wind, and wisely chose to move to safer (political) ground?

Could it be that Crow's been an insider looking to play the role of an outsider? Are walls of St. Petersburg collapsing as a result of our trumpets for justice?

Defections are indicative of opposition weakness. However, I'm reminded of the saying (slightly altered), beware of powerbrokers bearing gifts.

Larry Crow is in my view another 'Johnny-come-lately' attempting to wash the indelible stain of passivity from his hands.

And that's a very positive sign.

I think the misunderstanding here is the definition of "euthanasia." Many today do NOT consider removing a feeding tube as "euthanasia." I certainly consider it euthanasia, whether it meets another's definition or not. It would be more humane for the execution man in Tallahassee to come to Clearwater and give Terri a lethal injection, rather than starve her to death. I am appalled at the elected officials of FL in both parties.

I don't know anything about Representative Crow. It would seem that any legislative action at this point must be accelerated through a special session. I don't think Governor Bush will call a special session: I think his "letter" to Greer will be extent of his involvement. Apparently, some FL politicians do not want to disturb a large euthanasia-supporting portion of their constituencies.

It was Robert Schindler, Jr., who teaches in a Catholic school, was said the church was not doing much to help Terri. Correct me if I am wrong on that point, as I have read so many posts, and sometimes the information just runs together.

Perhaps we should start an Internet campaign urging vacationers to FL to boycott Pinellas Co. because of the pending starvation of Terri Schindler-Schiavo. That would get the attention of the local officials!

My heart is just breaking! Having worked in hospitals and nursing homes, taking care of people and at least comforting them when they were dying is a far cry from sending letters, e-mails or calling people. I hope and pray Terri's family are able to be with her day and night.

I was thirsty... and you gave me to drink.
