Baghdad Bob Cronkite will Boost Inquirer's Circulation
County Press ( Second Thoughts) ^ | 8-27-03 | William W. Lawrence

The Wall Street Journal, last week, ran a blip about Knight Ridder Inc., being "hurt by a continuing slump in demand for retail and classified advertising." Among those hit the hardest is the left-wing liberal Inquirer. Things should improve now, howeve. They hired the most trusted (heh, heh) "Baghdad Bob" Cronkite to boost circulation.

***

By adding "Baghdad Bob" to its left-wing slate of opinionists the Inquirer has put itself in the lead of the daily Bush-bashing sweepstakes. It is now nosing out the New York Times, The Washington Post and the Boston Globe. You can do it guys! Be number one! Bash Bush! Bash Bush!

Citizens Against Government Waste recently listed our own Arlen Specter in its "Pig Book" as one of the Senate's most profligate spenders.

Specter's answer was "If they left me out, I'd be worried." Specter faces a tough challenge against conservative Congressman Pat Toomey in next spring's primary election.

I don't think you'd ever see Toomey's name in a "pig book." He'd certainly never brag about it.

A court in western Denmark has upheld a sentence against Aage Bjerre, a Danish pizzeria owner who refused to serve French and German tourists. He was angry their governments opposed the United States in its war in Iraq.

Bjerre was ordered to pay a $780 fine or serve eight days in prison. He says he'll serve the time -- as a "matter of principle."

He's already sold his business -- because business dropped off, and police threatened to seize his restaurant permit if the ruling was upheld.

He has promised to continue his pro-American crusade by selling frozen pizzas on the Internet. And he says he'll put it clearly on his home page: "No pizzas to the Germans or the French."

Mr. Bjerre would make a great U.S. Citizen.

We have the most left-wing, liberal paper in the universe located right here in Philly. We are number 1.

As a native Delaware Valleyan, I do recognize how far left the Inquirer is. Still, I think the LA Times beats them all for permeating every nook and cranny of the paper with leftist propaganda. But it's a close race among all the major dailies. Time to re-start The Bulletin?

Time to re-start The Bulletin?

I was there as a reporter for its final 20 years. At the beginning The Bulletin was truly a fair and balanced newspaper. At the end, it was as bad as the Inquirer.

Did you know Sandy Grady or Jim Barniak? And did you know a guy named Gayle Becker? One of the main things I remember about The Bulletin was that it was one of the last papers to carry the comic strip "Dondi."

I know Grady, Barniak and Gayle Becker. Grady is now at the Daily News. I don't know whatever happened to Barniak or Becker. Becker worked with me in West Chester. I was then the Bulletin's Chester County bureau chief.

Do you remember the alcoholic who slept on the ledge near the entrance to the Bulletin building (70's)?

Also, the Baltimore Sun (owned by LA Times) is far worse than the Inky. They are now pushing a 3-day sub. (Wed, Fri and Sunday) at 75 cents/week for a year!

That was me. Just kidding, but actually there was more than one. We just stepped around them.

I still think the Inquirer is Number 1, but that may be regional pride talking.
