As for pistols, I think a 6" barrel ruger chambered in 44 mag would do if your big enough to shoot it one handed rapidly and accurately.

The important thing when shooting really big bears with pistols is to learn to do it with only the left hand. This leaves the right hand free to make the sign of the cross, which all Catholics are taught to do before first communion.
