I think I'm finally getting it!

If the "intolerant whackjob" social conservative is an elected official in a position to set policy and guide the country, lets say, President of the United States, he has far less ability and power to destroy the country than the "intolerant whackjob" social conservatives who make up his base, and you'd vote for him.

Thus, I should feel perfectly justified in voting for someone I believe is taking this country to ruin the fastest.

I feel so much smarter now.
