Movers Haul Away Ten Commandments in Montgomery

MONTGOMERY, Ala. — A chorus of demonstrators joined an irate man in screaming "Put it back!" Wednesday morning after a monument of the Ten Commandments was wheeled away from the rotunda of the Alabama Judicial Building.

"Get your hands off our God, God haters!" yelled the wildly gesturing, red-faced man who initiated the chanting.

Workers used a dolly to move the 5,280-pound granite marker from the rotunda to another, undisclosed place in the courthouse building.

Meanwhile, a Wednesday afternoon hearing to consider a lawsuit to keep the monument in the rotunda was canceled.

The lawsuit, filed Monday in federal court in Mobile on behalf of a Christian radio talk show host and a pastor, says forced removal of the monument would violate the constitutional guarantee of freedom of religion.

Christian Defense Coalition Director Patrick Mahoney told the crowd of demonstrators that he wasn't told where the monument had been taken.

Because of its size and weight, the marker was presumably moved to another location on the ground floor of the building.

Mahoney said the monument would not be covered, and that he would be allowed inside to see it once it was moved. Mahoney said he was informed of the plans by building manager Graham George.

Mahoney didn't know whether the monument's new location would be accessible to the public.

The federal court had said the monument could be in a private place in the building but not in the highly visible spot in the rotunda directly across from the building's entrance.

Protest organizers asked the crowd outside not to rush the building or do anything else except pray. Some people seemed to be listening, with dozens kneeling, bowing or lying face-down in prayer in front of the judicial building and on the steps before and after the monument's removal.

The marker was wheeled away in a matter of minutes.

A federal judge in Montgomery ruled last year that the monument, which Alabama Chief Justice Roy Moore (search) installed two years ago, violates the Constitution's ban on government promotion of religion and ordered its removal by Aug. 20. The U.S. Supreme Court last week declined to hear Moore's appeal.

But Moore refused to comply. Eight associate justices voted Aug. 21 to remove the monument, and Moore was suspended the next day.

Attorney General Bill Pryor, defending the associate justices, filed a motion Tuesday afternoon to dismiss the latest lawsuit, saying the Mobile court lacks jurisdiction and the complaint lacks merit.

About 150 monument supporters marched on Pryor's office Tuesday, demanding he resign for supporting the associate justices' decision. Seven representatives were allowed inside to meet with Pryor's chief deputy for about 20 minutes. The rest remained outside, chanting, "Resign now! Resign now!"

Gatherings of pro-monument demonstrators outside the judicial building have grown each day in the past week to at times number in the hundreds.

People seeking removal of the monument from its public site had said they were grateful that it was finally being moved, a week after the deadline set by a federal judge.

"This is a tremendous victory for the rule of law and respect for religious diversity," the Rev. Barry Lynn, executive director of Americans United for Separation of Church and State, said before the monument was rolled out of the rotunda. "Perhaps Roy Moore will soon leave the bench and move into the pulpit, which he seems better suited for."

Lynne's organization was among groups suing to remove Moore's monument, which he installed without telling the other eight Supreme Court justices.

Demonstrators promised to keep up their protests of the removal.

"If it takes 75 years to reclaim this land for righteousness, God find us and our children and our children's children ready," said the Rev. Rob Schenck, president of the national clergy council.

..You do know what happened in Canada, don't you? Spoken Biblical anti-homosexual passages have been deemed "hate speech" up north....

If we remove symbols of Church from government properties should the Judges themselves disrobe? Isn't that a throw back from the Church in England?

"it's simply an effort to keep church and state separated for the good of both systems."

No, it is raping one in the interest of the other. If what you were suggesting were really true, then we should have been in much worse shape morally back when folks understood and accepted our Christian foundation. Crime would have been much higher, quality of education lower and taxes higher to support the much larger number poor there would have been.

No, I don't GET IT. I can see where your so-called "independent thinking" led you...to a dead end I think. There is really no point in arguing with you. Unless people are exposed to something (it could be anything) they don't usually "wake up one morning" and decide to become something they have never even heard of. This is getting so stale. I just went to the beach near where I live and had a spiritual experience (I pretty much always do there) and now this just seems to tedious. I guess you want a world in which people are exposed to absolutely nothing as children. Then all of a sudden when they get older they can "wake up" and say "Hey, I want to be a homicide bomber"...or something.

Time for mourning is over for America. When I think about all the warnings that have gone un-heeded over the years;the rest of what remains of our Country can be taken away just as quickly as you saw the Monument of the Ten Commandments leave out.

There is a message being sent out by the Traitors and it has just been rubbed under your nose for all the world to see. This will be our legagcy if Righteous Patriots don't get up in arms and get active politically to deny this shamful act of barbarity! For us to allow the knucle draggers one moment of peace for this act, smacks of total abandonment of Freedom & Liberty we have always enjoyed but never fully appreciated in America.

Do you really love this country, have you worn its uniform, committed your time, treasure, and ability to it? Or do you just passively accept this as normal for the status Quo? I for one along with many others have been screaming warnings till we are hoarse to be vigilant and see things as they really are. Now because of non committed citizens we are now faced with a daunting challenge unlike any we have dealt with in our entire history. Time is not our friend Patriots are now required to carry America forward!

What I really want to know is this. Since atheists do not believe in G-d, since basically they believe in nothing, why do they care if other people believe? Why do they feel so threatened by what other people believe? Since to them there is no G-d and nothing higher than themselves, why can't they just be content with that unbelief? Why do they want to make a society that conforms to their nonbelief. Again, why do they feel so threatened? I would posit that Atheism IS a religion. After all, they are organized and have their own associations, etc., etc. It is a cult of nihilism that they honor. Why do they insist that the rest of us do likewise? What are they so afraid of?

If you followed Mineral Man's posts, you would know that he never says anything about his atheism unless confronted.

And he is confronted by people like you on almost every thread.

He's content with his unbelief.

You're not.

If you were, you'd shut up about him and ignore his posts.

They are here to insult Christians simply for their own amusement, my friend.

And they are going to have to learn that the days of FR's Christians being their punching bag are over. Cheers, By

I've been exposed to pretty much everything this workd has to offer, thanks. And when growing up, my parents chose to expose me to the full spectrum of ideas and options. I chose my own path based on my own beliefs. If you can't or won't understand that, I could really care less.

Ha! Good one, amigo.

That question's worth a thread, in itself. Greater minds than mine would have something insightful to say on it, but let me posit one little theory for you: I think that a lot of these Moore detractors are failures, in their personal lives. They resent and envy his accomplishments, as a soldier, as a lawyer, and as an American. They could never dream of making a stand on principle, because they have none themselves. So they run him down, solely to narrow the accomplishment gap. Cheers, By

...but Christianity was the Founder's raison d'etre>>>> Not of all them. Some would argue not even a majority of them...

LOL! What a load of codswallop. You guys make me laugh. The Founders' Christianity was the very core of their being. I'm not even going to bother posting the countless references to prove that. Go buy a biography of Washington.

You bunch of naysayers remind me of the old Soviet bureaucracy, who used to try and erase the history of their own founders, when new ideology made the latter unpersons.

ALS emailed the following to me from work and asked that I post it on his behalf......

I wish to extend an offer to draw up an agreement. The draft to be proffered by Alamo-Girl, the draft be posted in this thread, and to be refined by all parties willing to afterwards sign and abide by that agreement.

The agreement will consist of accepted guidelines and the protections of all who sign will be shared amongst us all and enforced by us all.

The final agreement will be put up on more than one website and distributed to all to make sure it isn't altered without the consent of all signators.

Any newbies coming into the crevo threads, when their behavior appears to violate the agreement, will be given an opportunity to sign on and partake of its protections and blessings.

Perhaps we can start a groundswell that exemplifies the true nature of Conservatives in their incessant desire to resolve issues rather than foment them.
